(AP) ? Mitt Romney is suddenly plunging into traditionally Democratic-leaning Minnesota and Pennsylvania, and his GOP allies are trying to put Michigan into play. It's forcing President Barack Obama to defend his own turf ? he's pouring money into television ads in the states and dispatching top backers ? in the campaign's final week.

The question is: Why this Republican move?

GOP efforts in the trio of Rust Belt states could indicate that Romney is desperately searching for a last-minute path to the needed 270 Electoral College votes ? without all-important Ohio. Or just the opposite, that he's so confident in the most competitive battlegrounds that he's pressing for insurance against Obama in what's expected to be a close race.

Or perhaps the Republican simply has money to burn. Use it now or never.

Former President Bill Clinton was dispatched in response on Tuesday. "Barack Obama's policies work better," he declared on the University of Minnesota campus, one of his two stops in a state that offers 10 electoral votes and hasn't voted for a Republican presidential candidate since Richard Nixon in 1972.

This late-game expansion of a campaign playing field that, until now, had focused on just nine states was taking place exactly a week from Election Day. At the same time, Obama spent a second day in Washington to focus on his presidential duties and Romney edged back into active campaigning in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy.

"This is a tough time for millions of people ... but America is tougher," the president said during a brief visit to the American Red Cross, where he sought to reassure victims, encourage aid workers ? and warn of more storm damage to come with rising floodwater.

In Ohio, Romney, too, spoke of concern for storm victims, telling supporters who were collecting supplies that "a lot of people hurting this morning."

Beyond the candidates' pause from feverish campaigning, the impact of the storm on the election wasn't all that clear.

National polls show an even race for the popular vote, though Obama appears to have both an edge in key battleground states in the electoral vote hunt and more state-by-state pathways to reach the 270-vote threshold.

Of the nine states where the two men have spent more than $1 billion in advertising since June, Romney is in the strongest position in North Carolina. But public and internal campaign polls show he's locked in stubbornly tight battles in Colorado, Florida, New Hampshire, Nevada and Virginia and is fighting to overtake Obama's advantage in crucial Ohio as well as Iowa and Wisconsin.

That said, Romney still could win. Anything can happen in the race's closing days ? including Democratic-leaning states like Minnesota, Pennsylvania or Michigan going Republican.

Clinton's Minnesota visit came just days after Romney and his allies started airing TV ads in the state. GOP-leaning groups including Americans for Job Security and American Future Fund were spending $615,000 this week. Romney spent a much lighter $29,000 last week, and it was unclear how much his campaign was spending this week. All together, the efforts led Obama to follow suit to prevent the state from slipping out of his grasp. His campaign was spending $210,000 on ads in Minnesota this week.

Polls show Romney having gained ground in Minnesota though still trailing Obama. And Obama has a much larger campaign footprint of paid staff and volunteers, including more than 30 full-time workers and 12 offices. Romney never has established much of campaign organization in Minnesota.

In Pennsylvania, Romney's campaign started pouring money into TV ads Monday for the first time, though Republican-leaning groups have been on the air in recent days trying to narrow the Obama advantage indicated by surveys. Republican groups - American Crossroads, Restore Our Future and Americans for Job Security - are spending at least $3.9 million this week. That does not include spending by Romney's campaign. Obama aides said the president's campaign is spending $625,000.

Romney has sent most of his Pennsylvania team to other states in recent weeks, and he has had no plan to visit, raising questions about whether he is actually playing to win the state that offers 20 electoral votes and last went Republican in the 1988 presidential election.

GOP allies also were running TV ads in Democratic-tilting Michigan in hopes of softening the ground for Romney in the final days, but there was no indication yet that the Republican himself would make a strong 11th-hour play for the state where he was born and raised. Obama's team said late Tuesday that it was answering Restore Our Future's $2 million in ads in Michigan, which has 16 electoral votes.

Obama's team cast Romney's moves into the three states, which have trended Democrat for more than 20 years, as a desperate act by a candidate who hasn't locked up the states he needs for a White House win.

"They understand they're not going to be able to win Ohio and now they're getting desperate and want to be able to put other states in play," Messina said. "We're going to win Pennsylvania, but we aren't taking anything for granted."

Romney political director Rich Beeson argued that Romney was playing to win, saying in a campaign memo: "With one week to go, and 96% of the vote on the table on Election Day in Pennsylvania, this expansion of the electoral map demonstrates that Governor Romney's momentum has jumped containment from the usual target states."

Other Republicans debated Romney's tactics.

Some GOP strategists in Washington and key states suggested the moves into Minnesota and Pennsylvania provide a cushion for the GOP candidate in case he loses Ohio or another key state.

"I don't think he has to break down a wall," said Republican strategist Greg Strimple, who was the pollster for 2008 GOP nominee John McCain's presidential campaign. "He's in position to run the table, but he needs to have an insurance card in there in case he doesn't."

Still others said it was simply a matter of Romney's campaign and backers having so much money that they can afford to make low-probability efforts in the off-chance that one might bear fruit. Many pointed out that it is almost impossible at this late date for the campaigns and their allied groups to buy more ads in saturated states such as Ohio, Virginia and Florida.

"It's not really desperation" that drives such decisions, said veteran GOP strategist Mike McKenna of Richmond, Va. "You think, 'Maybe I can make the other guy spend some money there,'" even if the state is probably out of reach.

Other Republicans joined Democrats in saying that Romney options are shrinking and he had no choice but to find different paths to victory, and had the money to do it.

"If they didn't have so much money, they wouldn't be able to do something with so little chance of success," said Tad Devine, top electoral strategist for Democratic nominee Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004.

He called the Minnesota and Pennsylvania efforts by Romney more a "head-fake than a strategic move" because of what he called enormous Democratic voting trends and electoral advantages. Those include a heavy union presence in both states and a large minority population in Pennsylvania.

Obama carried Pennsylvania and Minnesota each by 10 percentage points in 2008.

Peer review option proposed for biodiversity data

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Data publishers should have the option of submitting their biodiversity datasets for peer review, according to a discussion paper commissioned by GBIF.

The proposal is among a set of recommendations made by Mark Costello and co-authors in the paper "Quality assurance and Intellectual Property Rights in advancing biodiversity data publication," freely available for download through the GBIF Online Resource Centre.

The paper argues that concerns over data quality impede the use of large biodiversity databases by researchers, and subsequent benefits to society. Peer review is proposed as the highest standard of a scale of quality assurance that could be attached to datasets published through online networks such as GBIF (http://www.gbif.org/orc/?doc_id=5016).

"Peer review is the standard mechanism used to distinguish the quality of scientific publications. Here, we argue that the next step in data publication is to include the option of peer review," the authors write.

"Data publication can be similar to the conventional publication of articles in journals that includes online submission, quality checks, peer-review, and editorial decisions.

"This quality-assurance process will at least assess, and potentially could improve the accuracy of the data, which in turn reduces the need for users to 'clean' the data, and thus increases data use while the authors and/or editors get due credit for a peer-reviewed (data) publication."

The proposal complements existing procedures, which enable authors of metadata documents describing datasets published through GBIF, to submit 'data papers' to online journals. Experience has found that referees of these papers in practice review the data as well as the metadata, thus adding a layer of quality control.

The paper also recommends adoption of community-wide standards related to data citation, accessibility, metadata, and quality control to enable easier integration of data across datasets.

Salton Sea Volcano Mystery Solved

Earthquake swarms and a region-wide rotten egg smell recently reminded Southern California residents they live next to an active volcano field, tiny though it may be.

At the time, scientists said the phenomena did not reflect changes in the magma chamber below the Salton Sea. But now, researchers may need to revise estimates of the potential hazard posed by the Salton Buttes ? five volcanoes at the lake's southern tip.

The buttes last erupted between 940 and 0 B.C., not 30,000 years ago, as previously thought, a new study detailed online Oct. 15 in the journal Geology reports. The new age ? which makes these some of California's youngest volcanoes ? pushes the volcanic quintuplets into active status. The California Volcano Observatory, launched in February by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), already lists the area as a high threat for future blasts.

"The USGS is starting to monitor all potentially active volcanoes in California, which includes the Salton Buttes," said study author Axel Schmitt, a geochronologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. "With our results, I think this will further enhance the need to look into the system," Schmitt told OurAmazingPlanet.

Schmitt and his colleagues dated zircon crystals in the hardened lava of the buttes with a relatively new technique, a "helium clock" that starts ticking once the minerals begin cooling at the surface.

Resolving the Obsidian Butte riddle

The revised age solves a long-standing archeological conundrum, said Steve Shackley, emeritus professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley. Artifacts created from one of the five buttes, Obsidian Butte, first appear in Native American villages around 510 B.C. to 640 B.C. The Kumeyaay people, whose territory ranged from the coast to the Coso Mountains, crafted projectiles from Obsidian Butte glass, he said. "The men produced some of the best in the world," Shackley told OurAmazingPlanet.

However, for decades, researchers thought Obsidian Butte erupted thousands of years earlier. To explain why no one collected the valuable obsidian, archeologists hypothesized that Obsidian Butte was submerged under ancient Lake Cahuilla, the precursor to today's Salton Sea. But geologists had long proved that Lake Cahuilla was ephemeral, flooding and emptying over and over again, so the explanation was always problematic.

"If this dating method is correct, then the Obsidian Butte material wasn't even available, and that makes more sense archaeologically," Shackley said.

Rifting brings rising magma

In fact, that Obsidian Butte rises above the Salton Sea is what first attracted Schmitt's attention. A 30,000-year-old butte should have been buried by a combination of sediment and subsidence by now, he said. "It had to be very young," Schmitt said.

The buttes exist because California is tearing apart, forming new oceanic crust as magma wells up from below. The sinking Salton Trough is the landward extension of the Gulf of California, and marks the boundary between the Pacific and North America tectonic plates.

The lava source for the volcanoes is a magma chamberbeneath the Salton Sea, which also heats water for a nearby geothermal plant. Decay of uranium isotopes in zircon crystals show magma built up underneath the volcanoes for thousands of years before the latest eruption, the study shows. [50 Amazing Volcano Facts]

If another eruption occurs at the Salton Buttes, it will likely mimic past breakouts, Schmitt said. The volcanoes are made of sticky, slow-moving rhyolite lava. At Obsidian Butte, the lava cooled so quickly it turned into glass. However, pumice and ash found nearby means past breakouts started with a bang.

Schmitt said he hopes to study the area in more detail to better understand the most recent eruption. "The amounts of magma involved are relatively small and the impacts of an explosive eruption, meaning an ash cloud, would most likely be very local," he said. "We don't know very well how far any ash would have been dispersed, and that's something I would like to follow up on in the research."

Researching future hazards

The National Science Foundation's EarthScope project funds an extensive seismic imaging project in the Salton Sea that may soon reveal more information about what's happening deep underground.

"We'll be looking with great interest to see what we can tell from the Salton Seismic Imaging Project," said Joann Stock, a Caltech professor and an expert on the region's volcanic hazards who was not involved in the new study.

"I think [Schmitt's study] is a great contribution," she said. "It's an area where we should be concerned. We know that there's a lot of hot stuff down there," she told OurAmazingPlanet.

In August, an earthquake swarm shook the nearby town of Brawley. The USGS attributed the temblors to faults in the Brawley Seismic Zone. In September, a sulfurous stench emanated from the Salton Sea and wafted across the Inland Empire. The odor was tentatively linked to a fish die-off, but could also have been caused by volcanic gases, Stock said.

Egypt ruling allows time for constitution

CAIRO (Reuters) - A legal case against the assembly writing Egypt's new constitution was referred to the country's top court on Tuesday, a move likely to give the Islamist-dominated body enough time to complete its work before the judges can rule.

The step appeared to remove legal doubts overshadowing a process that will shape the post-Hosni Mubarak era. But the assembly still faces a struggle to build consensus around a text that is exposing fault lines in Egypt's new political landscape.

"The case is finished. The challenge will now be a political one, not a legal one. If you don't have a consensus you will have a big crisis," said Hassan Nafaa, a professor of political science at the University of Cairo.

The new constitution is a major component of a transition from military-backed autocracy to a democratic system of government that Egyptians hoped would follow the popular uprising that swept Mubarak from power last year.

Yet its drafting has been marred by political bickering. Non-Islamists say the process has marginalized other voices in society. Much of the debate has been shaped by a tussle over the role Islam should play in government.

There are also complaints the text falls short of hopes for revolutionary change sought by parties that were due to launch a new initiative to press their demands - a sign of a push to shape the debate.

The judge hearing 43 complaints against the way the assembly was formed sent the case to the Supreme Constitutional Court. Plaintiffs, many of them motivated by alarm at the Islamists' sway, argued the 100-person assembly had been formed illegally.

Legal experts said it could take months - up to six by some estimates - for the constitutional court to examine the case. Barring an exceptional burst of activity by the judges, that means the assembly will have time to finish the constitution by December's deadline. The text will then put to a referendum.

"The decision gives the assembly the chance to finish what it started by completing the draft and putting it to a referendum," said Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud, a Muslim Brotherhood lawyer, at the end of a chaotic court session punctuated by chants for and against the assembly.

"Once the constitution is approved in the referendum ... the Supreme Constitutional Court has no authority over it."

"CRUNCH TIME"

The constitution has been the focus of political and legal struggle since the start of the year. The Muslim Brotherhood and the Nour Party - both Islamist groups - secured an influential say over the process by winning a majority in the first parliamentary election held after Mubarak's removal from power.

But the assembly formed shortly afterwards was dissolved by a court ruling in March after plaintiffs fought a successful legal battle over its make-up. Subsequently, parliament itself was dissolved. New legislative elections are scheduled to take place after the constitution is passed.

According to an October 14 draft, the new constitution will guard against the one-man rule of the Mubarak era and institutionalize a degree of civilian oversight - not enough say the critics - over the military establishment that had been at the heart of power since a 1952 coup.

The draft has been criticized for failing to provide enough protection for rights such as the freedom to form trade unions, which it links to unspecified future legislation. Experts say the vagueness of some of the articles smacks more of the autocratic past than a democratic future.

Highlighting the concerns of the non-Islamists, the liberal Dustour Party headed by Mohamed ElBaradei and the Popular Current, a leftist party founded by defeated presidential challenger Hamdeen Sabahi, are launching a campaign for a "revolutionary constitution", a Current spokeswoman said.

Zaid Al-Ali, a constitutional lawyer who has been monitoring the process, said it was now or never for Egyptians to reach a consensus on the new constitution. "It's crunch time," he said.

"They have two months to rebuild trust between each other, iron out the inconsistencies and gaps in the draft text, and convince the country that the coming constitution is the best available solution for the country," he told Reuters.

Ahmed Said, head of the liberal Free Egyptians' Party, said President Mohamed Mursi must now intervene to appoint a more balanced assembly, indicating that street protests were the only path left for people seeking to change the assembly.

"The issue went out of the arena of the courts and has become one of the people," he told Reuters.

Oil price rises on Chinese manufacturing survey

By PAMELA SAMPSON
AP Business Writer

BANGKOK (AP) - The price of oil rose Wednesday after a survey of Chinese manufacturing suggested that a slowdown in the world's second-largest economy might be stabilizing.

Benchmark oil for December delivery was up 79 cents to $87.46 per barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped $1.98 to finish at a three-month low of $86.67 on Tuesday.

The fall Tuesday was sparked by a slew of disappointing earnings and forecasts released Tuesday by U.S. corporate giants. Revenue fell compared with a year ago at chemical maker DuPont, UPS and Xerox and others.

But sentiment improved after HSBC Inc. released a preliminary version of its monthly China purchasing managers' index, which rose to a three-month high of 49.1. That still was below the 50-point level that indicates a contraction in manufacturing but was a strong improvement from September's 47.9.

China's government has cut interest rates twice since June and is pumping money into the economy through higher investment by state companies and more spending on building subways and other public works.

"There is a lot of interest in Chinese data right now. I think some of the signals have been pretty mixed, and market participants are still swaying as to whether the stimulus influence of the last few months has been able to improve conditions on the ground," said Natalie Rampono, commodities analyst at ANZ Banking Group in Melbourne, Australia.

Brent crude rose 96 cents to $109.21 per barrel in London. In other energy futures trading in New York:

- Heating oil rose 2.7 cents to $3.058 per gallon.

- Natural gas fell 1.2 cents to $3.523 per 1,000 cubic feet.

- Wholesale gasoline rose 1.7 cents to $2.608 per gallon.

Manta is a mid-sized city in Manab? Province, Ecuador. It is the second most populous city in the province, the fifth most populous in the country and, economically, the third most important city of Ecuador. Manta has existed since Pre-Columbian times. It was a trading post for the Mantas. According to the 2001 census, the city had 192,322 inhabitants. Its main economic activity is tuna fishing. Other economic activities include tourism and a chemical industry with products from cleaning supplies to oils and margarine.

Manta possesses the largest seaport in Ecuador. The port was used by Charles Marie de La Condamine upon his arrival in Ecuador when leading the French mission to measure the location of the equator in 1735. From Manta, Condamine started his trip inland towards Quito.

Manta has an international cargo airport, Eloy Alfaro International Airport and an important military base (known as Manta Air Base or Eloy Alfaro Air Base). Between 1999-2009 Manta Air Base was used by U.S. air forces to support anti-narcotics military operations and surveillance flights against Colombian drug trafficking cartels. The lease was not renewed by the Ecuadorean government.

Manta is recognized thanks to its international film festival featuring groups from different places in the world. The Ecuadorian actor Carlos Valencia, once invited to Cannes Film Festival for his performance in Ratas Ratones y Rateros (1999) directed by Sebasti?n Cordero, who was born in the capital city of Quito.

Sport

As in the entire country, f?tbol (soccer) is the main sport of the city. The city has two professional teams: Delf?n S.C. and Manta F.C. who used to be Manta S.C. and among others were Green Cross F.C., America, Juventud Italiana and River Plate However, most inhabitants are fans of Barcelona Sporting Club and Club Sport Emelec the teams with most fans base in Manab?.

The practice of water sports is also very significant in the city. Water sports include surfing, (Manta was the host for the 2004 Bodyboarding World Cup), scuba diving, water skiing and kitesurfing. Nearby Manta, Salinas, Ecuador, was the site of the ISA World Junior Surfing Games Ecuador in 2009. Surfing in Ecuador is very popular because of the year round steady climate

Manta has some of South America's most breathtaking beaches. The city was selected as the site of the sixth South American Windsurfing Championship. It is renowned for its diving and sport fishing, with Black and Blue Marlins reaching even the 1.000 pound mark.

Tennis is also widely practiced in Manta. A number of ATP Challenger Series have been played in the city.

Entertainment

Manta hosts an International Theater Festival in September. Sporting events take place in November, and from January through April. The Central Bank Museum includes an important collection of Pre-Columbian craft. A MAAC cine, one of four in Ecuador, shows independent and non-Hollywood productions.

Economy

Manta possesses one of the most solid city economies in Ecuador. The main industries are fishing and tuna canning and processing. Processed tuna is exported to Europe and the U.S. International tuna corporations including Bumble Bee, Van Camps, British Columbia Packers, and Conservas Isabel, as well as leading national tuna processor Marbelize, have sizable factories in Manta. Other important products include vegetable oil. Large Ecuadorian corporations including La Fabril and Ales have their main factories in Manta. According to a recent survey by "Vistazo" (important Ecuadorian magazine), Manta's metropolitan area possesses many of the largest (by revenue) companies in Ecuador (following Quito and Guayaquil which have larger companies than Manta). Tourism is increasingly important for Manta's economy. Various cruise ships will make a port of call visit to Manta while traveling the southern Pacific Ocean. In addition, produced in Manab? and known throughout the world are the original and official "Panama" hats, which are made in the nearby town of Montecristi. Panama hats are favorite souvenirs among visitors of Manta. Manab? is also famous for its delicious cuisine. For those who enjoy seafood Manta is second to none.

Tourism

Manta receives numerous visits from foreign as well as local tourists. The most visited beaches include "El Murci?lago", "Santa Marianita", "San Lorenzo" and "Barbasquillo". Surfers often travel to San Lorenzo to find powerful waves (regularly head high). Kitesurfing has recently become very popular in Santa Marianita (Playa Bonita) because of the excellent wind conditions and large beach.

Nearby, also, is the small town of Montecristi, founded in the early 17th century. With its colonial architecture, this small town is best known for its wickerwork weaving, and as the original birth place of the Panama hats which, despite their name, were historically produced in Ecuador.

Gallery

Education

Manta possesses a number of Universities and High Schools. The largest and most traditional University is the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro; other universities include Universidad del Pacifico (Pacific University) and Manta Institute of Technology. The most traditional high schools include Colegio San Jose, and Colegio Manabi. Other foreign oriented upper class high schools include Jefferson High School (American), Julio Pierregrosse High School (Spanish), and Leonardo Da Vinci High School (Italian). These are the most prestigious high schools in the city with international standards.

Climate

Despite its near-equatorial location, the Humboldt Current serves to give Manta an arid climate (K?ppen BWh). The city is hot and cloudy almost throughout the year, but rainfall is very erratic and almost completely confined to the month from January to April. Even then it falls mainly during El Ni?o events when the Humboldt Current weakens.

Sister city

Manta has two sister cities, as designated by Sister Cities International:

Long Beach, California, USA Vladivostok, Russia

Tips For Adapting Your Mobile Marketing In Changing Times | Eric ...

Mobile marketing is one of the newest types of marketing, yet it actually incorporates elements of some of the oldest and well proven methods. Many of the same rules that apply to other kinds of marketing will apply to mobile marketing too. However, there are some noteworthy differences. This article presents some solid advice on getting the best from this brilliant advertising medium.

Make sure that your mobile marketing efforts work across all of the potential platforms your customers will use. Your messages should work on all mobile devices no matter the platform. Instead of creating a message for each platform, make sure your ad is simple enough to work on any platform. Simple is often the best solution for these problems.

Use MMS or text messaging to send coupons to new and existing customers when you want to increase sales. Offer promo codes with your coupons. These coupons should contain a special code that your mobile site can track. They can help to obtain new customers and reward your older ones.

TIP! For a great way to bring in customers and help your brand become more well-known, use QR codes in your campaigns. For sharing coupons, promotions and/or discounts, nothing is better than QR codes.

Use your website to your advantage. By advertising smartphone apps or mobile sites using this method, you?ll gain increases in their traffic. Show customers who visit your website how they can connect with you when they?re away from their regular computer.

Offer relevant information. Do not get so wrapped up in the excitement of utilizing mobile marketing that you forget that a purpose must be involved. Be sure that prospective and current customers are getting information that is relevant. It is important to remember that you are sending out information or making information available to a person who is spending time reading it. Always imagine receiving what you are sending out to maintain awareness of the person at the other end of your business marketing.

Mobile apps that are connected to your niche can be very useful for marketing purposes. Most users enjoy apps that give them breaking news and helpful tips. You can add links to related products or services in the app to generate sales, or you can profit directly by selling the app.

TIP! It?s important to take into account that mobile device users who are viewing your website are not going to be able navigate as easily as computer users. If you ensure your mobile marketing site is user friendly to both home computer users and mobile users, it will succeed, even if the page looks a bit simplistic on a home computer.

Effective mobile marketing techniques often include offers that a potential customer must access through codes or coupons. A discount offer or coupon will encourage people to visit your site and see what you have available.

Enlist the aid of your friends in testing your website, emails, advertisements and other aspects involved in your campaign. To get a truly unbiased opinion, you could pay an outside firm to test out your campaign.

When you link your mobile marketing ads back to your website, it?s important to supply links that work for both older mobile phone browsers and the newer smart phone and tablet browsers. If you have included flash on your website, only put a link to a mobile version.

TIP! Your home base is the main element of your campaign. Your efforts should include driving new folks to your home base and staying in touch with folks that already use it.

Do not message your customers randomly. It is important that you have something topical and relevant to impart to your customers when you are taking up their time. There have been instances of marketing campaigns going very wrong when businesses abused their mobile privileges with their customers and sent texts that did not have any substance. You are not your client?s friend, so be precise and to the point with any message that you send to them.

You should be able to give feedback on your ads and find a connection with a customer. You may have people not being as receptive as you would like, but keep in mind that any information from a consumer should be treated as valuable input.

Your mobile marketing campaign must be compatible with all mobile devices and platforms. This includes cell phones, iPads and other wireless gadgets. To get the most out of your campaign, make sure that the script you are using is compatible with all of the different devices.

TIP! Be sure to research enough about the needs of your target audience, so that you are not trying to cover them with a blanket of sales related information. This is how you can help to cater your message to your target?s tastes.

    Qr Codes

If you are addressing a relatively technology-savvy audience, add QR codes on your printed material. That way you make it easy for those who use smart phones to visit your website and access your coupons. Your brochures, business cards and catalogs should all have QR codes printed on them. If a potential customer is really interested in what you are selling, the QR code will give them the ability to learn more.

Send a reminder to your mobile marketing list a few hours before a sale or event begins on your website. This can remind your customers of all the great deals.

TIP! You need to not only focus on attracting new prospects, but keeping your old prospects when it comes to mobile marketing. New customers are less responsive to opening messages from you than ones that know you are reputable.

Minimize the number of offers you send in a week. It is proven that customers respond best to offers that are sent out only a few times a month. Get your customers to believe that they?ll miss an opportunity if they don?t quickly act on the offer. If they believe another offer is imminent, they are not as likely to be swayed by the current offer to take action.

The use of mobile friendly maps will help attract local customers. If a customer want to find you, a mobile map is helpful. Sometimes with so much business being done on the web, it is easy to forget that some people like to go to an actual store.

A mobile call for action must be capitalized through promotion. You need to expose your message to the largest audience possible, so advertise it on social media, your website and even in your store. Give your mobile marketing plenty of coverage, in order to give your customers many different chances to opt in.

TIP! If you want to see your profits go up, try some mobile marketing. Many people now use their mobile devices to check out social networking.

    Mobile Marketing

Do not overdo your use of mobile marketing, or customers may get annoyed. Research a variety of approaches before beginning your mobile marketing program. Your efforts will likely reward you with increased sales and business growth.

?I think the reason girls are not getting involved in computer science ...

One of the best parts of my job is meeting students who are taking charge of their
education, are engaged in their learning and are making a difference? even before they graduate. This was the case when I met Nikita Rau, a junior in high school, when I?spoke at?a Girls in STEM and ICT Careers event in New York a few weeks ago. ?It?s no secret that there is a?shortage of females in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) careers. Only 14 percent of engineers in the US are female. How do we change this?

In fact, a few short months ago, Rau wasn?t interested in a STEM-based career, either. She was planning on studying environmental science or fashion design.? Then, she took an advanced placement course with 19 other girls called, ?Girls Who Code? and her perspective of STEM careers changed completely.

While the camaraderie and collaboration was an essential part of Girls Who Code, perhaps even more important was the simple introduction to STEM fields ? or the combination of STEM fields with other areas of work. ?I realized that computer science can be involved with any field,? says Rau. ?Over the weeks when we worked with Twitter, I created an app where I connected environmental issues with technology. That was one way I could combine my interests.?

In today?s Daily Edventure, I speak with Rau about why she believes girls don?t get involved in STEM careers, and how she thinks we can change this. We also talk about her Twitter app, and her advice for teachers who want to get more girls involved in STEM careers (hint: make it about more than computer programming).

Can you describe how your professional achievements have advanced innovation in education?

After Girls Who Code, I was inspired to create a girls? computer?science club at my school called XX Hackers. I am working with my school to get girls more interested in the field.

How can others facing? similar challenges implement what you?ve learned through your work?

Other girls who are interested in the technology field and want to?get more people involved can create clubs or groups in their schools and?communities.

How have you applied technology in innovative ways to support your work?

I have always been interested in environmental science and fashion design. I would like to combine technology with at least one of these fields.

What is the best opportunity for innovation in education?

The best opportunity for innovation in education is technology. It can be incorporated in so many different ways into the everyday school curriculum, making class more interesting and providing a better overall learning experience.

What advice would you give a new teacher (or to anyone wanting to make a difference in education)?

I would tell a new teacher to make sure he or she really connects with the students and keeps the class engaged while teaching (possibly through demonstrations and the use of the Internet).

What educational ?trend? do you think is helping students? Is there a trend that is getting in the way of learning?

I think an educational ?trend? that is helping students is the use of the Internet as a learning tool. I have noticed that it is becoming more common for teachers to provide several helpful links to emphasize what was learned in class. However, I still think it is necessary for students to be provided with adequate class notes in order to ensure students are learning as much as they can.

If you could give one educational tool to every child in the world, what would it be? Why?

I would give them a computer because technology is truly the way of the future. Computers contain so much information and have so many different capabilities for people to learn from and utilize.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams First Impressions | Video Game Blog ...

Fellow gamers, you all may have heard a thing or two about the ?Giana Sisters?. This game is actually quite old (Amiga, Commodore 64), and was originally seen as a Mario clone ? because it pretty much was. They even went as far as to say ?The Brothers are History? on one of the game?s releases. It was easy to miss out on this game, due to obvious legal issues with Nintendo, resulting in the game being pulled off the shelves.

Years later, there would be a DS/Android port. We now have Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams.

Lots of love was put into ?Project Giana? to not just recreate the game, but make something worth playing today. Twisted Sisters is going to be so much more than a Mario clone. I?m a proud early backer of the project, that got funded?successfully?through Kickstarter. Sometime after this got successfully funded and I helped put it out there, I lost track of things for a while. News is, they did indeed get the ?Greenlight? from Steam and it can be pre-ordered here!

As a backer, I had access to a ?Backer Only? preview of the game, which confirmed the fact that I will?thoroughly?enjoy this game, even if I end up dying a lot. Giana is a ?Mario-like? platformer, but more fast paced, and being able to switch between the light and the dark world for both platforming purposes and overall background changes is the most important mechanic about the game, and what I think will drag people in that otherwise are not interested.

Unlike Mario Bros, you are both Giana Sisters?simultaneously and can switch back and forth between the two. Doing this, makes changes to the stage as mentioned above. There?s more to it than the fancy art style you see, which looks great in either world, by the way. Doing this will also change the positioning of platforms, objects, ect, and proper use of this mechanic will make the difference between you getting far and not getting much of anywhere. I streamed the backer preview (much shorter video on just the first boss on the Video Gaming Hard Corps YouTube channel), personally, for about an hour and a half, made lots of dumb mistakes, and learned this REAL QUICK.

I felt I needed to put out another post on this just before release, to show my love for it, and perhaps convince some of you out there that this game is gonna be quite the platformer, and it definitely worth checking out. More details from me personally on this here!

Something else that really helps this game is the music, which also changes when switching between the light and dark worlds. Chris Huelsbeck (original Giana Sisters music guy) teams up with Machinae Supremacy (awesome band that also happens to be my favorite one) to make the tracks for ?Cute? and ?Punk? Giana respectively.

So there you have it. You have a digest of what to expect here, and some links to check out if interested to find out more. From here, I?ll let a video do the talking. Feel free to check out the latest Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams trailer below.

    YouTube Preview Image

This game officially releases on Tuesday?yes in TWO DAYS! October 23rd, and I will be playing it ? a lot.

India- Tibet Friendship Society commemorates Sino- Indian War

    Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:02

Written by Mukesh Sharma, Kalimpong News Express

MUKESH SHARMA, Kalimpong, October 20: The India- Tibet Friendship Society, Kalimpong Branch carried out a rally from 10th Mile Fatak and ended at the Tharpa Choeling Monastery, today, commemorating China?s attack on India 50 years ago (Sino- Indian War). Many Tibetan Organizations mainly the Regional Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC), Women?s Association and different other Organizations partook in the rally protesting against China. Also present were the Buddhist monks and the students of Central School for Tibetan. Holding the portraits of Mahatma Gandhi and His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Indian and Tibetan flags, the participants shouted slogans against China. The President, of India- Tibet Friendship Society, PT Bhutia, Secretary, Sonam T Bhutia along with others were also present.

After the rally ended at the Tharpa Choeling Monastery, a meeting was held there, where the GTA Sabhasad, Samuel Gurung lighted the ceremonial lamp. One minute silence was also observed remembering and paying tribute to all the Tibetan martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Tibet and also to the Indian Army Jawans who died during the 1962 war.

President, PT Bhutia, in his address notified that the day is observed all over India as a ?black day?, today. Until now, the country India, has been resisting, but now time has come that people should be aware, he said and added that India do not share its boundary with China. It?s Tibet with whom China has boundary with, he informed. However, there are always talks of boundary infringement, this is happening because there is no unity between the political leaders. Thus, the people need to be united, said Bhutia.

The meeting ended with the National anthem.

Maximized Living brings natural cancer killing lifestyle to the world

(NaturalNews) October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a group of natural health leaders are focused on teaching the world about natural solutions to the cancer epidemic. Orlando-based Maximized Living has launched the book "The Cancer Killers" to teach the world how to prevent and reverse cancer naturally.

In 1971, President Richard Nixon inaugurated the National Cancer Act and made a strong proclamation that inspired and resourced scientists to find the "cure." The government and charitable groups have raised and allocated over $2 trillion over the last 41 years all in search of the ever elusive "cure."

The number of newly diagnosed Americans with cancer today has tripled since 1971 up to 1.6 million people per year. Over 600,000 people die from cancer each year which is 50 percent higher than in 1971.

The media has us believe that we just need to raise more money for more research into the cure. But could it be that we are looking in the wrong direction? Shouldn't we be educating people on how to create a robustly healthy body that kills cancer on the spot?

The latest research supports the statement that your body already contains the cancer killing cure. The human body is equipped with a high powered immune system and intracellular, anti-oxidant defense systems that seek out and destroy abnormal cancer cell development. If you follow the natural laws of life, you have the ability to prevent and reverse cancer.

"The Cancer Killers" was the inspiration of Dr. Charles Majors of Chicago. In 2010, Majors was diagnosed with an inoperable, stage four bone marrow cancer that had metastasized to his brain. Despite the odds being against him, he chose to leave conventional medicine and apply natural strategies to get himself well. The challenging process of reversing terminal brain cancer gave Dr. Majors a level of authority over the subject.

The book is based around the idea that cancer cannot overwhelm a healthy body. The immune system naturally destroys abnormal cells and prevents cancer. The book makes it clear that cancer is merely a symptom of a poorly functioning body.

The conventional approach to cancer is that it is a genetic problem and the best prevention is early detection. This approach has proven to be a failure. "The Cancer Killers" outlines a complete proactive approach to prevent cancer. The cancer prevention strategies include positive mental outlook, maximizing nutrition, healthy nervous system through corrective chiropractic care and regular exercise to oxygenate the body. The book also outlines the role of toxins in the cause of many forms of cancer and ways to improve cellular detoxification.

The cause of cancer is a toxic and deficient lifestyle and the true cure is a lifestyle that meets all of our natural born genetic requirements. Cancer cannot live in a highly oxygenated body that has maximal nerve supply to every cell and a potent anti-oxidant defense system in place.

Throughout the month of October, the Maximized Living group of doctors is teaching large cancer killer makeovers all over the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Africa. They estimate to have over 25,000 people attend these large cancer seminars to learn about the step-by-step guide to prevent cancer and specific strategies to reverse cancer if they have already been diagnosed.

Visit http://www.hairfreeclinics.com/ser_laser_acne.html to discover their laser acne treatments that will help you find that flawless skin you?ve been looking for. Acne is a pest that not only inflicts young adults and pre-pubescent tweens, but haunts adults as well. Almost everyone will suffer from acne at least once in their lifetime. Its plague on humanity has lasted since the dawning of time, spawning many urban legends and old wives tales for treatment, along with many pharmacological treatments on topical solutions.

The myths and legends about its origins and preventive measures sometimes unfortunately just don?t add up. At http://www.hairfreeclinics.com/ you will find a solution that works and won?t leave you discouraged after another failed trial of sticky creams and burning gels. Get the face you deserve and zap away those zits with professionals who know how to treat acne like the plague it is. You won?t ever have to relate to a late night infomercial about bad skin ever again.

How does laser spot treatment for acne work? It?s simple. It?s a non-invasive, pain free treatment with almost no side effects to deal with. A doctor will emit a laser over affected areas, which kills acne causing bacteria and prevents their spread to other areas on the skin. The laser is then used to shrink pores to prevent dirt, oil and grime from clogging them, creating less access points for acne causing bacteria to grow. The laser is then used to remove the thin layer of damaged tissue allowing collagen to grow and make new skin more elastic and less vulnerable to acne. After three or so sessions, significant progress in skin health will be obvious. So find out if laser spot treatment is right for you today. Visit www.hairfreeclinics.com to learn about their treatments and plan your visit. Your skin will thank you and you will be glad you made the effort to finally get rid of the acne that was holding you back.
