(AP) ? Cindy Hill, a laid-off office manager who lives in a small town in Missouri, called her husband Thursday with urgent news that would change everything: "We won the lottery."

"What?" he asked.

"We won the lottery," she repeated. But Mark Hill, a 52-year-old mechanic who works at a meat processing plant, is the kind of person who carefully checks the prices for everything he buys, and he needed proof. This is the "Show-Me State" after all.

He drove to his mother's house, where his wife was waiting with their quick-pick ticket, and confirmed for himself that the numbers matched those drawn for a record $588 million Powerball jackpot that they'll share with an unknown winner who bought a ticket in Arizona.

Missouri lottery officials officially introduced the Hills as winners Friday in front of reporters and townspeople gathered at the high school in Dearborn, which is about 40 miles north of Kansas City. The announcement was not a surprise. The Hills' name began circulating Thursday, soon after lottery officials said a winning ticket had been sold at a Trex Mart gas station and convenience store on the edge of town.

The Hills chose to take their winnings in a lump sum, not annual payments. Lottery officials estimated the cash payment at about $385 million, or about $192.5 million for each ticket.

The oversized novelty check handed to the Hills on Friday was written in the amount of $293,750,000, but Missouri Lottery spokeswoman Susan Goedde said that after taxes, they will receive about $136.5 million.

"We're still stunned by what's happened," said Cindy Hill, 51, who was laid off in June 2010. "It's surreal."

The couple have three grown sons and a 6-year-old daughter they adopted from China five years ago. They said they are now considering a second adoption with their winnings, and they plan to help other relatives, including their grandchildren and nieces and nephews, pay for college. They're planning vacations, and their daughter, Jaiden, wants a pony. Mark Hill has his eye on a red Camaro.

More immediately, they're preparing for "a pretty good Christmas" and anticipating an onslaught of requests for financial help.

"When it's that big of a Powerball, you're going to get people coming out of the woodwork, some of them might not be too sane," Cindy Hill said. "We have to protect our family and grandkids."

The jackpot was the second-largest in U.S. history and set off a nationwide buying frenzy, with tickets at one point selling at nearly 130,000 per minute. The other winning ticket was sold at 4 Sons Food Store in Fountain Hills near Phoenix. No one has come forward with it yet, lottery officials said.

Before Wednesday's drawing, the jackpot had rolled over 16 consecutive times without someone hitting the jackpot.

Myron Anderson, pastor of the Baptist Church in nearby Camden Point, said he heard Thursday that the Hills had won the huge prize. Anderson said he has known Mark Hill since they attended high school together.

"He's a really nice guy, and I know his wife, and they have this nice little adopted daughter that they went out of their way to adopt," Anderson said. Funeral services for Hill's father were at the Baptist church, but the family attends church elsewhere, he said.

"I hope it's good news for them," Anderson said. "I've heard awful horror stories about people who get all that money in their lap and how everybody treats them, and if you don't mind me saying, I mean just the fact that the press is going to be after them."

Kevin Bryan, a lifelong Dearborn resident, said the only other local lottery winner he could remember was a farmer who won about $100,000 in scratch-off game years ago "and bought himself a combine."

In a Mega Millions drawing in March, three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot, the largest lottery payout of all time.

Kroger lifts forecast after stronger third quarter

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kroger Co. is raising its earnings outlook for the year after the nation's largest traditional supermarket chain reported a third-quarter profit that topped Wall Street expectations.

The company, which also operates Fry's, Food 4 Less and Ralphs, has been working to improve the shopping experience and build customer loyalty as it fends off competition from specialty grocers such as Whole Foods and big-box retailers such as Target, as well as dollar stores and drugstore chains.

As shopping habits change, the Cincinnati-based company has also been experimenting with new formats such as its larger "Marketplace" stores that have a bigger footprint and sell general merchandise in addition to groceries. It has also opened about a dozen smaller "Ruler" stores that focus primarily on cheaper, private-label products.

In an interview, CEO Dave Dillon has said that Kroger's supermarket format would continue to evolve to remain relevant. He noted that the boundaries between supermarkets, big-box retailers and dollar stores are also blurring.

For the three months ended Nov. 3, the company said revenue at locations open at least a year rose 3.2 percent. The metric is a key gauge of health because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations.

The company said it earned $316.5 million, or 60 cents per share, for the period. That compares with $195.9 million, or 33 cents per share, a year ago. The most recent quarter included gains from a settlement with Visa and MasterCard and a reduction in the company's pension fund contributions.

Not including special items, the company earned 46 cents per share. Revenue rose 6 percent to $21.81 billion.

Analysts on average expected an adjusted profit of 43 cents per share on revenue of $21.55 billion, according to FactSet.

Kroger now expects to earn between $2.44 and $2.46 for the year, up from the previous range of $2.35 to $2.42.

Kroger's stock rose $1.19, or 4.8 percent, to close at $26.25 Thursday. The company operates more than 2,400 supermarkets and multi-department stores in the U.S.

(AP) ? Egypt's two highest appeals courts suspended their work Wednesday to protest presidential decrees that gave the country's Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi nearly absolute powers, state television reported.

Judges of the Cassation Court decided in an emergency meeting that they will not return to work until Morsi rescinds his decrees, according to state TV. The country's lower appeals court also decided Wednesday to stop work nationwide.

The move followed a defiant statement by the Supreme Constitutional Court that rejected charges made by Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood that it is working to bring down his government.

The developments are likely to stoke the political turmoil triggered by Morsi when he issued a constitutional declaration on Thursday that placed him above oversight of any kind, including by the courts, and extended similar protection to parliament's lower chamber and a 100-member panel drafting a new constitution.

The constitutional court, which was not included in the suspension, is due to rule Sunday on the legality of the two bodies, which are dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists. A ruling, regardless of which way it goes, would constitute a direct challenge to Morsi, who took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president but has enraged pro-democracy activists who claim he is acting too much like the authoritarian leader he replaced.

The court ruled in June to dissolve parliament's lower chamber, also dominated by Islamists, a decision that Morsi and his Islamist allies described as part of a "conspiracy" to bring down the regime.

A strike by the appeals courts and the rare criticism of the president contained in the Supreme Constitutional Court's statement come a day after at least 200,000 people gathered at Cairo's Tahrir square to protest Morsi's decrees, which also gave him unlimited powers to "protect" the nation.

The size of the protest was reminiscent of some of the larger rallies held in the square during the 18-day uprising that toppled former President Hosni Mubarak's authoritarian regime nearly two years ago. Clashes between some protesters and police continued Wednesday.

The liberal opposition has said it would not enter a dialogue with the president about the country's latest political crisis before Morsi rescinded his decrees. They plan another massive rally on Friday.

Powerball fever sweeps the nation

The allure of the record $500 Powerball jackpot has led to long lines across the nation at local mini-marts and gas stations, with Americans hoping their champagne and caviar dreams become a reality when the numbers are drawn tonight.

The jackpot was boosted Tuesday from $425 million to the now historic $500 million sum, which is expected to get sweeter as millions of Americans rush to the store for their last chance to purchase a ticket and become a multi-millionaire overnight.

Powerball officials tell ABC News they expect to sell more than 105,000 tickets every minute before the drawing. When the dust settles, more than 189 million tickets would have been sold for the half a billion-dollar jackpot. That's more than double the number sold for Saturday's $325 jackpot that nobody won.

ABC News was allowed access to the Powerball studios in Tallahassee, Fla., where the 11 p.m. ET drawing will take place. The closely guarded machines and balls are locked in a vault before the numbers are drawn and only a select few are allowed inside the room during the actual broadcast.

Anyone who enters or leaves the vault is documented and workers who handle the lottery balls wear gloves, worried that human touch might change what numbers are randomly drawn.

Cameras are located in every nook and cranny of the Powerball studio, spying on workers as they ready the machines for the big moment. Lottery officials in several states will be watching those feeds in real time to monitor the proceedings.

Not everyone has Powerball fever in the country as tickets for tonight's jackpot are not offered in eight states. But that has not stopped many Californians and Nevadans who have flocked to Arizona to get in on the action.

"I'd say the line has to be like three, three and a half hours," one person told ABC News while waiting online to purchase tickets Tuesday.

Still, the long lines have not deterred those who hope to dramatically change their lifestyle and make their wildest dreams become a reality.

"I'm going to the Bahamas and enjoying myself on an island," said one Powerball hopeful.

Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Des Moines, Iowa-based Multi-State Lottery Association, said the chance of getting a winner tonight is approaching 60 percent.

"We call it the redneck retirement fund cause sooner or later, somebody is going to," said one man.

There has been no Powerball winner since Oct. 6 ? that's 16 consecutive drawings without a winner. It's the second-highest jackpot in US lottery history, behind only the $656 million Mega Millions prize in March.

Powerball tickets doubled in price in January to $2, and while the number of tickets sold initially dropped, sales revenue has increased by about 35 percent over 2011, according to the Associated Press.

Lottery officials put the odds of winning Wednesday's Powerball pot at one in 175 million. With so many people plaything this time around, some are worried it may hurt their odds.

"Your odds of being a winner are still the same. With so many people playing, it does mean are more likely to split the jackpot if you want," said Scott Norris, math professor at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Everyone who lines up with cash in their hand and dreams in their head seems to have a strategy in picking the winning combination of numbers. Or, do you simply let the computer pick for you?

"It doesn't matter. Your odds of winning are actually the same no matter who picks it," said Norris. Norris says the only real advantage that can help someone is buying more tickets.

"Your odds increase directly proportional to the number of tickets you buy. So if you buy 100, your odds are 1 in 7 million, but still astronomically small," he said.

With odds so small in a game where just about anyone who plays is a loser, there is some hope for those living in Illinois and New Jersey. Both states have sold three winning tickets for jackpots worth at least $300 million.

A single winner choosing the lump sum cash option would take home more than $327 million before taxes.

ABC News' Steve Osunsami and Ryan Owens contributed to this report.

Whither the Twinkie?

Hostess products. Companies such as Hostess go to extensive lengths to protect their recipes

Photo by Paul J. Richards/AFP/Getty Images.

A bankruptcy judge approved the liquidation of Hostess brands last week. Historic brands like Twinkies, Wonder Bread, and Ho Hos will be sold at auction to the highest bidder. Will the buyers get the exclusive right to use the recipes for those products?

Not exactly. Confectioners rarely patent their recipes, because applying with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office means publishing the ingredients and methods. The legal protection lasts only 20 years, after which time anyone can profit from the creation. Manufacturers instead guard their recipes as trade secrets, a status that isn?t time-limited. The company forces employees to sign nondisclosure agreements and sues rival manufacturers that extract their methods and formulas from workers. The companies that eventually buy Hostess brands will gain access to those trade secrets and the right to enforce the secrecy agreements. If, however, someone cracks the Twinkie recipe and manufactures an identical product under a different name?the brand names are protected by trademark?there?s very little the new owner will be able to do.

Candy companies go to extraordinary lengths to protect their recipes. In her essay ?Trade Secrecy in Willy Wonka?s Chocolate Factory,? law professor Jeanne C. Fromer explains that the fictional Wonka?s lock-and-key approach to candy making isn?t far from reality. Companies store their recipes in safes. For many years, Mars, the company that makes Skittles, Snickers, and M&Ms, refused to reveal its president?s name. The company also builds its own machines and blindfolds visiting repairmen. No Hershey employees know the proportions of ingredients in the company?s chocolate bars.

Recipes are patentable, in theory, but few of your kitchen creations would qualify. An idea must be novel and nonobvious to deserve legal protection. That?s a difficult standard to meet, because most recipes are combinations of widely available ingredients. Recipes are most likely to win patent protection if they involve some novel manufacturing process. Several inventors, for example, have obtained patents for variations on the peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich by rearranging the ingredients to extend shelf life.

Recipes can also be copyrighted, which prevents others from copying and selling the instructions on how to make a product. Copyright, however, doesn?t protect the food itself from commercial exploitation. In other words, you?re not allowed to sell copies of the current Toll House chocolate chip cookie recipe, but you can make and sell the cookies.

Congo rebels set conditions for Goma withdrawal

GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - Rebels in Democratic Republic of Congo said on Tuesday they would withdraw from the eastern city of Goma only if President Joseph Kabila agreed to their demands, which the Congolese government was quick to dismiss as a farce.

The deadlock raises the risk that the eight-month-old insurgency could turn into an all-out war in a region dogged by nearly two decades of conflict that has killed more than 5 million people, fuelled by competition over mineral resources.

The M23 rebels, who U.N. experts say are backed by Rwanda and who say they want to "liberate" all of Congo, captured Goma last week after Congolese soldiers withdrew and U.N. peacekeepers gave up defending the city.

The Ugandan military, which has been coordinating talks with M23, said earlier on Tuesday that M23 leader Colonel Sultani Makenga had agreed to withdraw from Goma with no conditions.

But the political chief of M23, Jean-Marie Runiga, told reporters in Goma his forces would withdraw only if Kabila held national talks, released political prisoners and dissolved the electoral commission, a body accused by Western powers of delivering Kabila a second term in flawed 2011 polls.

"The withdrawal, yes. If Kabila agrees to our demands then we'll go quickly," Runiga told reporters in a hotel in Goma, flanked by senior M23 officials in civilian clothes and rebels in military fatigues.

Runiga said Kabila's government was rotten with corruption, lamented the country's dilapidated roads, and said Congo's only schools and hospitals had been left by Belgian former colonial rulers. He said any talks would have to tackle such issues.

"We want the involvement of the political opposition, civil society and the diaspora so we can tackle these issues together, so that the people hear the truth and that once and for all we find a solution to the problems that have poisoned our society and politics," he said.

"We are fighting to find solutions to Congo's problems. Withdrawal from Goma is not a precondition to negotiations but a result of them," he said.

The conflicting statements indicated a solution to the insurgency in eastern Congo, which has displaced 140,000 civilians according to the United Nations, was not close.

Lambert Mende, Congo's government spokesman, quickly dismissed M23's demands.

"It's a farce, that's the word. There's been a document adopted by the region. If each day they're going to come back with new demands it becomes ridiculous. We're no longer in the realm of seriousness," Mende told Reuters from Kinshasa.

Later in the day, Ugandan military chief Aronda Nyakayirima read out the withdrawal plan to reporters, but made no mention of M23's apparent rejection of the plan.

He said the plan specified M23 would begin its withdrawal on Tuesday, and government troops would enter Goma two days later, followed by a visit by regional defense chiefs "to evaluate the situation and find out whether all these timelines were met".

NO SIGN OF PULL-OUT

The rebels on Tuesday showed no signs of an imminent pull-out and continued to guard strategic sites in Goma.

More than half a dozen armed M23 fighters dressed in crisp fatigues stood in front of the central bank building as U.N. peacekeepers in two troop carriers looked on.

"This is a sign we are in this for the long haul. M23 is digging in while the Congolese army prepares another offensive," said Jason Stearns of independent research organization the Rift Valley Institute. "It is difficult to imagine what the possible compromise could be between the two sides," Stearns said.

African leaders had at the weekend called on M23 to abandon their aim of toppling the government and to withdraw from Goma. The Great Lakes heads of state also proposed that U.N. peacekeepers in and around the city should provide security in a neutral zone between Goma and new areas seized by M23.

Runiga also demanded the lifting of house arrest on a leading Kinshasa-based opposition member Etienne Tshisekedi as well as an inquiry into army corruption.

He said the rebels were ready to work with MONUSCO, the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Congo.

In a potential further escalation, Rwanda said on Tuesday its troops clashed with Rwandan FDLR rebels who attacked three villages on its border with Congo, but a spokesman for the FDLR denied its fighters had been involved.

Rwanda has in the past used the presence of the FDLR as a justification for intervening in neighbor Congo. But the rebel group, which experts say has dwindled in strength, has not mounted a significant attack on Rwanda in years.

Rwanda government spokeswoman and Foreign Affairs Minister Louise Mushikiwabo said they would not allow Tuesday's attack to interfere with the regional push to bring peace to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

"This morning's attack by the FDLR forces from their bases in DRC is clearly an attempt to take advantage of the volatile situation in Eastern DRC," she said in a statement.

"We will counter any violation of Rwandan territory by the FDLR and continue to protect our borders but will not allow today's fighting to derail the ongoing regional peace process."

Congo and U.N. experts accuse Rwanda of backing the M23 group in eastern Congo, which has big reserves of gold, tin and coltan, an ore of rare metals used in making mobile phones.

That is denied by Rwandan President Paul Kagame who has long complained that Kabila's government and U.N. peacekeepers have not done enough to drive out the FDLR from eastern Congo.

Scientist claims to have sequenced ?Bigfoot? DNA

A frame from the October 20th, 1967 Patterson-Gimlin film claiming to depict BigfootA Texas scientist claims to have sequenced the DNA of Sasquatch, a creature whose very existence is mysterious to many and purely mythological to most.

"Our study has sequenced 20 whole mitochondrial genomes and utilized next generation sequencing to obtain 3 whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples," Dr. Melba S. Ketchum of Nacogdoches, Texas, says in a news release.

"The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species."

Ketchum writes that her team's research indicates the "North American Sasquatch" is a hybrid of a female Homo sapien and a male of "unknown hominin species," whose DNA matched approximately 15,000 years ago.

Sasquatch, more commonly known as Bigfoot, has been a staple of American mythology for hundreds of years. The modern Sasquatch theories took on a newfound prominence in 1958 when the first official Bigfoot search party was launched in California.

Most members of the scientific community have discounted the Sasquatch theory. However, in a Sept. 27, 2002, interview with National Public Radio, Jane Goodall appeared open to the concept, saying, "Maybe they don't exist, but I want them to."

So, how do Ketchum's claims hold up under scrutiny?

The Houston Chronicle's Eric Berger does some unraveling of Ketchum and the claims she made in the news release.

For starters, Berger notes that while Ketchum has 27 years of genetic research experience during her career as a veterinarian, her company, DNA Diagnostics, has received an "F" rating from the Better Business Bureau.

But more important, Ketchum has not allowed scientific peer review of her findings.

"That is a massive red flag. Real research scientists almost never preannounce their research findings," Berger writes. "In effect she is using the mantle of science to confer credibility on her discovery, without actually deserving the credibility."

And finally, where exactly did Ketchum get her DNA sample? After all, if she was working from a reliable source, that alone might be the real story because no physical evidence of Bigfoot exists on record.

As it turns out, Ketchum says her DNA sample was obtained from a blueberry bagel left in the backyard of a Michigan home that, according to the owner, sees regular visits from Sasquatch creatures.

In other words, it seems likely that the legend of Bigfoot will remain more myth than reality for the foreseeable future.

In order to appear more on quality search engines, be sure to use this knowledge you have obtained.

One way to increase your page?s search rank and attract more visitors is to include a site map. This way all the pages on your site will be linked together. Having these links in the side bar will help customers navigate your site, improving your traffic.

Use social media for SEO. YouTube makes it easy to include video of demonstrations or product features, while Facebook and Twitter offer direct interaction with your customers.

Using a strategic keyword method in the text on your site or blog can be an excellent way to boost your search engine traffic. Input keywords into the website content of your page in a balanced manner. A common practice is to use your keyword two times in the first paragraph. Then, get your keyword into the following 200 words as much as you reasonably can, without being too obvious.

Websites offering useful information and high quality content will rank above websites that are only used to sell a product. For example, you can include how-to-guides or top 10 lists to add a more consumer friendly focus to your site.

Every title on your site should contain a keyword. To connect each page of your website, ensure that every one has the same title tag attached to it. To better connect everything, you should include your company?s name at the end of the title link as well. Unless you have a truly famous company name, people are less likely to search via your business name.

Focus on just one area of SEO techniques at a time. Trying to incorporate every SEO technique out there at once will lead you to doing a poor implementation job at all of them. Pick one and implement it to its fullest before moving on to the next.

By adding new content to your site, you give search engine crawlers a reason to consider your website. The better the content you provide, the more likely it is to be shared on other websites, providing you backlinks and increased traffic. The people who chose to share your articles will come back to your site, and their friends will too.

Never ever duplicate any content on your website, or Google will penalize you for it by reducing your page rank. Instead, think of something new to write about to attract a different audience.

Before you outsource your SEO, investigate the company thoroughly. SEO has become big business, and there are many unqualified scammers ready to take your money and run. Look at what past clients are saying and what people are saying online. Doing so might save you from a costly and irritating boondoggle.

The key to successful META description tags would be creating a unique tag for every page. Not using different tags can mean lower search engine ratings.

Target one keyword phrase when optimizing a page. When you try to use a lot of keywords on your page, it starts to get confusing. If you concentrate on one thing, you will have better information, and your readers will want to return. Search engine optimization is overshadowed by a loyal readership.

Search engine optimization can be improved by switching your style of writing from AP to SEO. To do this, simply use your keywords throughout your writing, as much as you can, and still make it flow. Your search results should improve since it works by examining the density of the keywords it has found.

Use an accurate title tag to make sure that search engines will understand your page content. You should not have it over 60 characters, most search engines do not show anything after that. They will also give text or terms coming after that point less weight.

Be on top of your site?s search standings, when you are dealing with search engine optimization. Keeping an eye on your ranking to see if search engine optimization techniques are working. You can follow your page rank with the Google toolbar or Alexa.

SEO does not necessarily have to be hard or confusing. All that is required is some focus, and a willingness to adapt your approach. Make use of the ideas you?ve learned from this article, and before long, you will see your search ranking rise.

LONDON???Could computers become cleverer than humans and take over the world? Or is that just the stuff of science fiction?

Philosophers and scientists at Britain's Cambridge University think the question deserves serious study. A proposed Center for the Study of Existential Risk will bring together experts to consider the ways in which super intelligent technology, including artificial intelligence, could "threaten our own existence," the institution said Sunday.

"In the case of artificial intelligence, it seems a reasonable prediction that some time in this or the next century intelligence will escape from the constraints of biology," Cambridge philosophy professor Huw Price said.

When that happens, "we're no longer the smartest things around," he said, and will risk being at the mercy of "machines that are not malicious, but machines whose interests don't include us."

Fears that machines could overtake humans have long been the subject of science fiction ? the computer HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey," for example, is one of film's best-known computer threats.

Price acknowledged that many people believe his concerns are far-fetched, but insisted the potential risks are too serious to brush away.

"It tends to be regarded as a flakey concern, but given that we don't know how serious the risks are, that we don't know the time scale, dismissing the concerns is dangerous. What we're trying to do is to push it forward in the respectable scientific community," he said.

While Price said the exact nature of the risks is difficult to predict, he said that advanced technology could be a threat when computers start to direct resources towards their own goals, at the expense of human concerns like environmental sustainability.

He compared the risk to the way humans have threatened the survival of other animals by spreading across the planet and using up natural resources that other animals depend upon.

Price is co-founding the project together with Cambridge professor of cosmology and astrophysics Martin Rees and Jann Tallinn, one of the founders of the internet phone service Skype.

The university said Sunday the center's launch is planned next year.?

Indy Bikehiker: "I CALL YOU FRIENDS."

Move beyond beholdenness and servitude to friendship in maturing spiritual and social relationships

I?ve been thinking about the nature of spiritual relationships.? If we--as we--claim faith in and relationship to Jesus, what is the nature of that ongoing relationship?

I?m struck by a current fixation on worship in many Christian settings and songs. ?Sermons, articles, songs and events?leave me with the impression that being a Christian is about groveling dependency and some persistent demand of God to be submitted unto and worshiped.

Yet, near the end of their apprenticeship, Jesus pointedly moved his closest disciples to a relationship of friendship.? ?I no longer call you servants?I call you friends.? Check it out in John 15:14.

Jesus challenged his disciples to move beyond calling him "Lord" to calling him "friend." ?He directs them beyond serving him to mutuality, beyond discipleship to collegiality, beyond dependency to responsibility, beyond worship to fellowship.

The trajectory of a grace-based spiritual relationship arcs toward friendship with Jesus, fellowship with God.

"With"--what a wonderful word and expression of relationship.

This isn't new, of course. ?It's as old as Abraham. ?"Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness--and he was called the friend of God." ?Check it out in James 2:23. Imagine becoming a lifelong friend of someone who saved your life. ?Imagine someone was your rescuer--one who risked his or her life to save and restore yours, one to whom you will forever be grateful.? But now,?that same person is your friend?listening, attending to, tuning in, walking with, abiding, guiding, counseling. ?And you are his or her friend--there is commitment and mutuality. ?You will always be aware of and grateful for his or her rescue, but the relationship has developed, grown and matured well beyond incessant beholdenness.

I'm privileged to encounter and participate in--receive and contribute to--more than a few friendships that extend across many miles and years. They are like gifts--each is unique in its origin and nature. ?I can talk to any one of these friends about almost anything with considerable confidence. ?We can go for months--sometimes years--without contact and then pick up on a thread of conversation and care that seems never to have been interrupted. ?Along with knowing familiarity and ever-surprising discovery of wonder, there is a mutual trust, freedom and readiness to guard the other's dignity. ?Because of this, we are able to share and say hard or difficult things when necessary. ?I imagine this to be the nature of spiritual relationship with Jesus, of fellowship with God.

Grateful, yielding friendship more than commanded servitude describes the maturing relationship of faith. ?I will ever be aware of and confess my dependence on Jesus' salvific work for me and for all, but ?he has invited--indeed called--me and all who respond to him to friendship.

After journaling about this, I happened onto comments by theologian Jurgen Moltmann, quoted by Brian McLaren, regarding spiritual friendship. ?To the traditionally understood titles of Jesus as prophet, priest and king, Moltmann suggests another:

"But the fellowship which Jesus brings people, and the fellowship of people with one another to which he calls, would be described in one-sided terms if another 'title' were not added, a title to describe the inner relationship between the divine and the human fellowship: the name of friend."?
"Friendship is a human relationship which springs from freedom, exists in mutual freedom and preserves that freedom... The many-faceted work of Christ...can be taken to its highest point in his friendship," for friendship is "the highest form of love." (in The Church in the Power of the Spirit, quoted by McLaren in Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammad Cross the Road?)

Next time you hear or sing along with a Christian song that goes no further than worshiping God and thanking Jesus for his rescue, remind yourself: that's where it starts, but that's not where it points. We aren't merely servants of Jesus; we're friends. ?The difference is pretty significant.

I haven't heard it in many years, but I recall the refrain to a gospel song once frequently sung in the churches of my upbringing:
"Friendship with Jesus!
Fellowship divine!
Oh, what blessed, sweet communion!
Jesus is a Friend of mine."
Friendship as a spiritual relational development also has strong implications for how we "do" ministry and go about so-called "secular" community development.

A few years ago, I listened to Northwestern University urban community development guru John McKnight conduct a seminar on his now well-known and impactful principles and practices of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD). McKnight ended the seminar by pulling out of his wallet a folded piece of paper. He unfolded and read it slowly: John 15:9-17. He repeated for emphasis: "I no longer call you servants, I call you friends."

McKnight's whole ABCD concept is based on becoming friends with God and friends with our neighbors--no matter their socio-economic status or resources or whatever. ?We are to be neither lords nor servants (McKnight demonstrates how much "professional servants" cost those who are being "served" in the welfare and compassion industries. ?What the lords don't take with them when they abandon urban communities, the servants divide amongst themselves). Instead, we are called to be mutually responsible friends. ?The policy and practical implications are powerful.

Friends trump lords and servants every time--whether in spiritual or social terms.

I posted a blog piece--a prayer--a few weeks ago that precipitated this reflection. ?It really is a twin to this piece. ?A God-Wrestler's Prayer.

I look forward to your "friendly" responses.

Creativity and Affect

The authors of this volume attempt to cohere the field of creativity and affect in a scholarly fashion by categorizing and characterizing some of its major features, including environmental influences; underlying processes; specific affective states; the role of atypical or pathological personalities; unconscious processes; physiological components; proactive and reactive stimuli; intrinsic motivation; eminence versus everyday creativity; and testing of assessing the affective component of creativity. The authors also examine and discuss the role that emotions, feelings and moods play in the creative process. This volume also provides a vehicle for students and psychotherapists, with which they can fully appreciate the feelings generated by the creative process and the various stages of it. How does a creator feel during its more mundane phases? Can he or she tolerate the frustration of failing and being unsuccessful most of the time? What is the real joy of achievement, success, and ultimate acceptance by ones peers in a given field? Do we have to exhibit major psychopathological features in order to achieve eminence in specific fields? What is the role of mind altering substances, mood disorders, and the like? This volume answers these questions and more. Author: Shaw, Melvin P./ Runco, Mark A./ Shaw, Melvin P. GE Buys 3D Printing Company To Make Parts For ... - Business Insider

CONFIRMATION as to how seriously some companies are taking additive manufacturing, popularly known as 3D printing, came on November 20th when GE Aviation, part of the world?s biggest manufacturing group, bought a privately owned company called Morris Technologies.

This is a small precision-engineering firm employing 130 people in suburban Cincinnati, Ohio.

Morris Technologies has invested heavily in 3D printing equipment and will be printing bits for a new range of jet engines.

Morris Technologies uses a number of 3D printing machines, all of which work by using a digital description of an object to build it in physical form, layer by layer. Among the 3D printing technologies used by Morris Technologies is laser sintering. This involves spreading a thin layer of metallic powder onto a build platform and then fusing the material with a laser beam. The process is repeated until an object emerges. Laser sintering is capable of producing all kinds of metal parts, including components made from aerospace-grade titanium.

One of the attractions of printing parts is that it saves material. Instead of machining components from solid billets of metal, in which much of it may be cut away, only the material that is needed to shape the part is used. Printed parts can also be made lighter than forged parts, which promises fuel savings.

Many manufacturers already use 3D printing to make prototypes of parts, because it is cheaper and more flexible than tooling up to produce just one or two items. But the technology is now good enough for it to be used to make production items too.

Among the components that Morris Technologies plans to print will be some used in the LEAP jet engine (pictured), which is being developed by CFM International, a joint venture between GE Aviation and Snecma of France. The LEAP engine is scheduled to enter service in the next few years on a number of short-haul airliners. More than 4,000 engines have already been ordered.

GE is buying Morris Technologies (which includes a sister company, Rapid Quality Manufacturing) for an undisclosed sum. GE sees the purchase as an investment in an important new manufacturing technology. ?Our ability to develop state of the art manufacturing processes for emerging materials and complex design geometry is critical to our future,? said Colleen Athans, general manager of GE Aviation?s supply-chain operations.

Some people think additive manufacturing will overturn many of the economics of production because it pays no heed to unit labour costs or traditional economies of scale. Designs can be quickly changed, so the technology enables flexible production and mass customisation.

The GE deal is further evidence for those who believe that product innovation will increasingly go hand-in-hand with manufacturing innovation. So proximity of production and R&D will matter more. With GE Aviation based just outside Cincinnati, the firms are almost neighbours.
