(AP) ? Josh Duhamel doesn't mind the slime.

The "Transformers" star is hosting Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday and says the ceremony's traditional dumping of green goo on celebrities isn't as bad as it looks.

"I got slimed and I thought that it was going to be disgusting," said Duhamel on a break from rehearsing for the show earlier this week. "But it was actually almost soothing in a way. It's this warm goo that comes over you, and then it's a matter of just getting it all off. They have showers in the back."

Still, Duhamel hasn't been able to convince his pregnant wife, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie, to take part in a sliming.

"I think, in fact, she put in a request not to be," he said, laughing.

Duhamel will be joined on stage at the University of Southern California's Galen Center by such famous attendees as Sandra Bullock, Steve Carell and Chris Pine, with Pitbull, Ke$ha and Christina Aguilera scheduled to perform.

Nickelodeon said a record-breaking 326 million votes have already been cast for the show, which honors kids' favorites in film, music, sports and TV.

Zimbabweans vote in favor of new constitution

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) ? Zimbabwe's electoral body said Tuesday that 94.5 percent of voters cast a ballot in favor of a new constitution that calls for a strengthening of human rights and a curb on presidential powers after a decade of political and economic turmoil in the southern African nation.

But as the results were announced African and international law organizations expressed outrage at the jailing for a third night of prominent rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa on charges that she allegedly obstructed justice.

"Her arrest is not just an attack on her profession but on the people of Zimbabwe who have just voted yes to a new constitution that enshrines fundamental human rights," said her lawyer, Thabani Mpofu.

A new constitution was a key demand of regional mediators who forged a shaky and acrimonious coalition between Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe and the former opposition leader, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, after the last violent and disputed national polls in 2008.

All main political parties had called for a "Yes" vote in the referendum.

Judge Rita Makarau, head of the state electoral commission, said Tuesday that just over 3 million Zimbabweans voted for the draft constitution and 170,489 voted against. Spoiled ballot papers were not factored in to the final results of votes cast by less than 50 percent of those eligible to vote in the referendum.

The 170-page draft constitution has now to be submitted to the Zimbabwe parliament for approval, a procedural formality, before President Mugabe is asked to sign it into law.

The draft limits the future presidential office to two five-year terms, a clause that is not retrospective. Mugabe, 89, who led the nation to independence in 1980, can rule for another two terms if his party wins upcoming five-yearly parliamentary and presidential polls.

The proposed constitution sets up the first Constitutional Court on citizens' grievances and a Peace and Reconciliation Commission to investigate political violence and human rights abuses blamed mainly on Mugabe's ZANU-PF party over the past decade of troubled polling and alleged vote-rigging.

Regional observers of Saturday's referendum said voting was free of violence except for minor scuffles between rival youth groups. The outcome of voting was seen as "credible" and reflecting the free will of electors.

But independent local monitoring groups reported that Mugabe party loyalists had taken down the names of voters emerging from some polling stations, a possible ploy used to threaten them in the crucial full scale elections.

Human rights groups say the new constitution does not immediately scrap sweeping media and security laws enforced by state institutions loyal to Mugabe, and that can only be done by a the next elected parliament.

The independent Research and Advocacy Unit said in its latest bulletin that reforms proposed in the new constitution "will clearly take a much more energetic parliament than the one we have currently" if they are to be implemented. The group said, "Constitutions are not the panacea for all ills."

The continued jailing of rights lawyer Mtetwa highlights how Mugabe's police and judicial system needs thorough reform, said lawyers.

Police brought her to court Tuesday after ignoring a judge's order to release her Monday.

Mtetwa, arrested Sunday while representing four officials of the prime minister's party who were being searched by police, arrived at the Harare magistrate's court in an open-back police truck. She greeted colleagues and activists with a spirited wave but was not allowed to speak to reporters.

Mtetwa's arrest was a ploy to stop her from defending officials of Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change party, her attorney argued in court Tuesday.

State prosecutors objected to bail for Mtetwa and the four MDC officials and court was adjourned to Wednesday.

Mtetwa was abused by the police in "the high-handed manner in which they treated her by handcuffing her and throwing her into the back of an open truck as if she was a threat to police and national security," said her lawyer, Mpofu.

While in custody, police confiscated her mobile phone and went through it in breach of norms of attorney-client confidentiality, he said. He said when locked in a cell two male police officers at around midnight even tried to remove prison-issue blankets from her.

To the charge she shouted at police officers and attempted to prevent them from doing their duty, Mtetwa, in her written testimony, said she told the police she wanted to see their search warrants but was ignored.

"What you are doing is unlawful, unconstitutional and undemocratic," she told the officers, Mpofu said.

The police response was to arrest her, he said.

The refusal of police to obey a court order to release Mtetwa showed that Zimbabwe "is a state that is prepared to act like an outlaw," Mpofu told the court.

Obstructing justice carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

Mtetwa has represented Tsvangirai and several of his top aides in past cases brought against them. She has also defended human rights defenders and journalists. She holds an array of international awards, including those from the American Bar Association and the main European Bar Human Rights body.

Tear gas in Kenya as prime minister files suit

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) ? Police in Kenya lobbed tear gas Saturday on crowds supporting the prime minister as he filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to void the presidential election, a vote the prime minister says was neither free nor fair.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga's court filing comes a week after Kenya's election commission declared Uhuru Kenyatta ? the son of Kenya's founding father ? the winner of the country's March 4 vote. Kenyatta won by a hair, with 50.07 percent of the vote, breaking the 50 percent mark by about 8,000 votes out of 12.3 million cast.

Kenya's election has been largely peaceful, unlike the disputed 2007 vote that sparked two months of violence that killed more than 1,000 people.

But downtown Nairobi carried the scent of tear gas Saturday after police threw canisters at Odinga supporters who gathered despite warnings from police. An Associated Press reporter at the scene said the supporters were not demonstrating or being violent when the police lobbed the tear gas.

Later, police lobbed more tear gas at supporters gathered in front of the Supreme Court building.

"It's everyone's right to hold demonstrations, but police will stop demonstrations that may have ramifications on security," said police spokesman Masoud Mwinyi. "Police are taking precautionary measures to warn people to disperse, but if they don't we will use minimum force. Their presence can create unnecessary tension. Already we are seeing pockets of volatility."

Odinga wants Kenya to hold new elections. The petition filed Saturday asks the court to set aside the announcement by the election commission on March 9 that Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto had won the presidency and deputy presidency. Odinga is being represented by a U.S. lawyer who formerly represented former President George W. Bush, said Eliud Owalo, Odinga's campaign manager.

The Supreme Court has two weeks to decide on the petitions.

Odinga came in second in the eight-candidate field with 43 percent of the vote. He had hoped to keep Kenyatta under the 50 percent mark and force a two-man runoff.

The Odinga petition says that the voter register was altered and "mysteriously grew overnight by a large proportion" on the eve of the election. Votes cast exceeded the number of registered voters in several locations, it said, adding that the change in the number of registered voters was to allow the election commission to manipulate the election results.

The petition said that the electronic voter ID and biometric voter registration systems were "so poorly selected, designed and implemented that they were destined to fail," which forced the election commission to revert to a "discredited manual system" that carried risks for abuse and manipulation.

The election commission "failed to establish systems which are accurate, secure, verifiable, accountable and/or transparent and indeed declared results which in many instances had no relation to votes cast at the polling station," the petition said.

If the court upholds Kenyatta's win, he will become the second sitting president in Africa to face charges at the International Criminal Court. He and Ruto both face charges related to having helped orchestrate the 2007-08 postelection violence. Both deny the charges. Ruto's trial begins in late May; Kenyatta's begins in July.

Kenyatta has promised to report to The Hague even if he wins the presidency.

Despite the second straight disputed presidential election, Kenya has for the most part remained at peace during the election period, though vicious online fights between supporters of Kenyatta and Odinga have broken out on Facebook and Twitter.

Odinga has asked for calm from his supporters during a week of news conferences in which his team has claimed the vote was rigged. He has said he will respect the Supreme Court's ruling.

One supporter said Saturday he hoped the court overturns Kenyatta's win.

"We have a lot of faith and confidence that the verdict will reflect the will of the people. Kenyans are not peaceful, they are only calm," said Warega Fredrick, pro-Odinga student who was outside the Supreme Court on Saturday.

Also on Saturday, civil society groups filed a petition with the Supreme Court asking that the election results be nullified on the basis that the election process was irrevocably flawed. The groups working under the name Kenya for Peace, Truth and Justice said the actions of the electoral commission threaten future elections.

The groups said the commission has not yet offered a credible explanation for all of the election's technical failures.

Election day did not go as planned. An electronic voter ID system intended to prevent fraud failed across the country for lack of electricity in some cases and overheating computers in others. Vote officials instead used manual voter rolls.

After the polls closed, results were to be sent electronically to Nairobi, where officials would quickly tabulate a preliminary vote count in order to maximize transparency after rigging accusations following the 2007 vote. But that system failed, too. Election officials have indicated that computer servers overloaded but have yet to fully explain the problem.

As the early count system was still being used, election results showed more than 330,000 rejected ballots, an unusually high number. But after the count resumed with the arrival in Nairobi of manual tallies, the number of rejected ballots was greatly reduced, and the election commission said the computer was mistakenly multiplying the number of rejected ballots by a factor of eight.

The U.S., U.K. and Europe are watching the results closely in Kenya, the lynchpin of East Africa's economy. Many African countries have directly congratulated Kenyatta for winning the presidency, but many Western countries including the U.S. and U.K. released statements congratulating Kenyan voters but omitting any mention of Kenyatta.

Two teens shot dead in park; two others wounded

    By Sarah Grieco, NBCSanDiego.com

Four teenagers were involved in a shooting at an Oceanside, Calif., park Wednesday, according to police. Two of the teenagers were found with gunshot wounds and two were dead, investigators said.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. at Libby Lake Park in the city near the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base.

Oceanside Police received multiple calls of shots fired at 8:50 p.m. They scoured the park and found one person shot and injured.

A couple of minutes later they found two other people shot and killed, then another person shot and injured in the same general area. At least of the two victims were shot more than once, officials said.

Witnesses said they saw several people running from the scene.

Officers are looking for two or more suspects, possibly in a gray or silver 2005 or 2006 Toyota Tacoma or Toyota Tundra extended-cab pickup.

Edgar Sanchez Rios, 16, and 13-year-old Melanie Virgen were found dead at the scene. The two wounded victims are also younger than 18 and were taken to Palomar Medical Center.

    More news from NBCSanDiego.com

Melanie was an 8th-grade student at Caesar Chavez Middle School and Edgar was a student at El Camino High School. Friends and family created a makeshift memorial at the park for the victims.

?The things that happen in this park startle me to death,? said Lt. Leonard Cosby of Oceanside Police Department. ?It shouldn?t be happening.?

This shooting took place not far from a memorial in the park for a fatal shooting that occurred here just under two years ago.

The bodies of Fernando Felix Solano, 16, and Sandra Salgado, 14, were found May 3, 2011, in the northeast area of the park, which is located north of the San Luis Rey River.

The residential area is near several schools, including Libby Lake Elementary.

?I don?t want it to be a reflection on either the people in this park or the city of Oceanside, because it?s not that way,? Cosby said.

Cosby said his heart goes out to the community because he has worked a majority of his 26 years in the area.

The victim's friends are pleading for any new information of a suspect.

"If you know anything, please say something," said the victims' friend Efrain Almanaz. "We don't want more lives getting killed."

Wave Small Business Blog - Wave Small ... - Wave Accounting

Wave is focused on building tools for small businesses, so when someone from another space knocks on our door it surprises us! Last year a high school teacher got in contact with us, and opened our eyes to a new problem Wave had the opportunity to solve: high school accounting.

This blog is written by that high school teacher, Rickesh Kotecha. Rickesh is an innovator in the classroom, an educational maverick, the author of the Wave Teacher Resources!?

Using Wave in my grade 11 and 12 classrooms came about after years of frustration with the available accounting software.?Most accounting programs were not compatible with our school's technology, ran off a network server or were too complex for students to navigate through.?As a department, our options were limited. I felt that students deserved something that was applicable to the curriculum, easy to use, and most of all applicable in the real world for those who were likely to follow their entrepreneurial spirit.??

    Rob Portman's Reversal

    By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone )

    NOTABLES

A CHANGE OF HEART: In a series of interviews on Thursday, U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, once on the short-list to be Mitt Romney's 2012 running mate announced he had reversed his opposition to gay marriage and revealed that his own 21-year-old son is gay. The Senator penned an Op-Ed in the Columbus Dispatch outlining his change of heart: "I have come to believe that if two people are prepared to make a lifetime commitment to love and care for each other in good times and in bad, the government shouldn't deny them the opportunity to get married. That isn't how I've always felt. As a congressman, and more recently as a senator, I opposed marriage for same-sex couples. Then something happened that led me to think through my position in a much deeper way. Two years ago, my son Will, then a college freshman, told my wife, Jane, and me that he is gay. He said he'd known for some time, and that his sexual orientation wasn't something he chose; it was simply a part of who he is. Jane and I were proud of him for his honesty and courage. We were surprised to learn he is gay but knew he was still the same person he'd always been. The only difference was that now we had a more complete picture of the son we love." Read the full Op-Ed: http://bit.ly/Ydg7tU

OBAMA STARTS HIS (FUNDRAISING) ENGINES: President Obama assured Republicans this week that he's not running a perpetual campaign, that "I actually just want to govern, at least for a couple years." But now it appears that Obama's self-described hiatus from the campaign trail will only last another three weeks, reports ABC's Devin Dwyer. Obama will hit the road to California April 3 to help raise money for Democratic candidates across the country aiming to unseat House Republicans in 2014, according to Democratic sources. They say the president will headline two fundraisers in San Francisco for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will also attend, the sources said. http://abcn.ws/10WjMzj

MITT MEETS CPAC: Mitt Romney is poised to deliver his first major speech since losing the 2012 election today at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Maryland. He offered a preview of his post-election thoughts during a recent interview on Fox News Sunday, but his remarks to the gathering (scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Friday) will be his chance to set a tone for his future role within the Republican Party. "As the guy who lost the election, I'm not in a position to tell everyone else how to win," Romney said on Fox, but added: "I'm not going to disappear." It was at the same conference in 2008 that Romney dropped out of that year's Republican presidential primary. And last year it was at CPAC where he declared himself "a severely conservative Republican governor."

ON THE ROAD AGAIN: After three days of meetings with lawmakers on the Hill, President Obama is venturing outside the Beltway today to deliver the first energy speech of his second term, ABC's Mary Bruce notes. This morning, Obama tours the research facilities at Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois before delivering remarks on his "all-of-the-above" energy strategy. The president will call on Congress to establish a new Energy Security Trust, urging them to set aside $2 billion over ten years to support research into "cost-effective technologies." The president first proposed the idea in his State of the Union address, touting it as a way to free Americans from the pain at the pump.

    THE ROUNDTABLE

ABC's MICHAEL FALCONE: Today, Sen. Rob Portman, a Republican from Ohio, the former head of the powerful Office of Management and Budget under President George W. Bush and once a top contender to be Mitt Romney's running mate showed us that he is a dad first and politician second. "It's a change of heart from the position of a father," Portman told reporters from three Ohio newspapers yesterday reversing his opposition to gay marriage, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. In addition to his 21-year-old son, who told Portman and his wife that he was gay two years ago, the Ohio senator said he consulted with clergy, the bible and even former Vice President Dick Cheney before coming to his conclusion. CNN's Dana Bash observed that in her interview with the senator, he "was anything but comfortable discussing something as private and personal as his son's sexuality," and at times, "even seemed to tremble a bit." But, it was this high-ranking Republican's reaction to his college-age son's revelation that is most telling: "Our reaction was not about policy or positions. It was about him as a son and letting him know we were 110 percent supportive of him."

ABC's ELIZABETH HARTFIELD: If Rob Portman's rhetoric on gay marriage sounds vaguely familiar, that might be because it closely mirrors President Obama's words when he came out in favor of gay marriage in his interview with ABC's Robin Roberts last year. Obama spoke of talking to "friends and family and neighbors," and "members of my own staff who are incredibly committed, in monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships." Obama told Roberts, "At a certain point, I've just concluded that - for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that - I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." Sounds a lot like Rob Portman: "I've come to the conclusion that for me personally I think this is something that we should allow people to do." It's not rocket science. Both men are careful to use the word "personally" to make it clear they're not making a political statement, but more importantly, they're emphasizing their own experiences with loved ones who are gay. This is one of the most commonly heard reasons why people change their minds on this issue. Someone close to them comes out, and the argument stops being political and becomes personal. It's all of these individual experiences that add up to the cultural shift we're seeing on this issue.

ABC's SHUSHANNAH WALSHE: The news this morning that Rob Portman has reversed his opposition to same-sex marriage has obviously centered around the decision-making process of the senator who was on Mitt Romney's short list for vice president. But, it's also worth noting the bravery of his 21-year-old son, Will, a Yale University student who Portman says "encouraged" him to go public with his change of heart. It can't be easy to come out publicly for anyone, but to have the courage to do it at such a young age and as a member of such a public family is extraordinary. Portman said he consulted former Vice President Dick Cheney who said "follow your heart." It's clear Will Portman took the same advice. And this morning Will tweeted a link to his father's Op-Ed in the Columbus Dispatch headlined: "Gay couples also deserve chance to get married" with the following message: "Especially proud of my dad today."

FUSION's JORDAN FABIAN: The conservative movement is still grappling with several core issues in the wake of the GOP's loss in its second-straight presidential election, and that's especially true when it comes to immigration and Hispanic outreach. Thursday's session at the Conservative Political Action Conference provided a stark view of that internal battle. On one side, Republican officials are urging the party to back comprehensive immigration reform and aggressively reach out to Hispanic voters. But on the other side, elements of the conservative movement aren't convinced those are worthy causes. CPAC sponsored a panel of speakers who spoke in favor of addressing comprehensive immigration reform. That's a goal of the host of the conference, American Conservative Union Chairman Al Cardenas, who supports legalizing undocumented immigrants. "The dynamics of the immigration debate have changed," he said in an interview. But not everyone at CPAC agrees that the party needs to dramatically change its approach. The immigration panel was interrupted by several hecklers, who scoffed at the notion the GOP should eliminate some of its harsh rhetoric on immigration. Audience members booed when Texas Gov. Rick Perry said that Republicans "are told our party must shift appeal to the growing Hispanic demographic." Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) did not mention immigration in his speech to activists even though he's helping draft a bill in the Senate. The conservative movement has come a long way on the immigration issue. Several CPAC attendees noted that the reception to a pro-immigration reform panel would have been much worse six years ago during the last immigration overhaul effort. But reformers still have a long way to go.

ABC's TOM SHINE: Consider this: A $6 trillion price tag for the Iraq war. Here's an accounting, courtesy of Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies: Federal spending on Iraq $1.7 trillion through fiscal year 2013. Future health and disability payments for veterans, $590 Billion. Interest accrued to pay for the war, $3.9 trillion. Those astronomical amounts of money never seem to come up when Washington politicians talk about the deficit.

    BUZZ

OBAMA CONCLUDES CHARM OFFENSIVE: WHAT NOW? After spending part of the past three days at the Capitol, the president concluded his charm offensive with a meeting with House Democrats yesterday afternoon, telling lawmakers he believes his recent outreach has been "fruitful" as he works to coax Congress out of a stalemate on deficit reduction, notes ABC's John Parkinson. Regarding future budget negotiations, the president told the caucus that he wants a "balanced approach" with "judicious cuts" in order to solve the country's long-term problems. While the president's newfound engagement has been received with a range of optimism to skepticism, House Speaker John Boehner said there are "big differences" that remain between Republicans and Democrats. And House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer said he expects the top levels of Congressional leadership to continue working behind the scenes toward a bipartisan agreement in the months ahead. "If we're going to work towards solutions to the problems that confront us, it will have to be done in a bipartisan way. If it's not done in a bipartisan way, we've seen it doesn't get done," Hoyer, D-Md., said. "The way we go is to continue discussions." http://abcn.ws/WqHPCG

GAY REPUBLICANS FIND A VENUE AT CPAC. Despite not being invited, a gay Republican group found its way into conservatives' biggest annual conference, anyway, notes ABC's Chris Good. Much has been made of the Conservative Political Action Conference's (CPAC) decision not to invite GOProud, a prominent gay Republican group. Along with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, GOProud is one of the conference's two most notable absences caused by ideological differences with conference organizers. GOProud found a venue there, nonetheless. At a panel hosted by the Competitive Enterprise Institute, entitled, "A Rainbow on the Right: Growing the Coalition, Bringing Tolerance Out of the Closet," GOProud's leadership and supporters voiced their discontent with the conservative movement - before a packed, standing-room-only conference room at the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Md., with a bar wheeled in to serve attendees after the gay politics talk was over. "There are a few in our movement who just don't like gay people," said GOProud Executive Director Jimmy LaSalvia. "And in 2013, that's just not OK." http://abcn.ws/153xa1o

MARCO RUBIO TALKS SCIENCE, 'MUTUAL RESPECT'. Sen. Marco Rubio yesterday challenged some of the stereotypes affixed to the Republican Party on two hot-button topics, abortion and gay marriage, telling the Conservative Political Action Conference that his positions on the issues make him neither a "chauvinist" nor a "bigot," reports ABC's Arlette Saenz. "In order to work together with people you disagree with, there has to be mutual respect," the Florida Republican told the annual, three-day conference in National Harbor, Md. "That means I respect people that disagree with me on certain things, but they have to respect me, too. "Just because I believe that states should have the rights to define marriage in a traditional way does not make me a bigot. Just because we believe that life, all life, all human life is worthy of protection of every stage in its development does not make you a chauvinist." Rubio, 41, continued to argue that science was on his side when it comes to abortion, saying "the people who are actually close-minded in American politics are the people that love to preach about the certainty of science when regards to our climate but ignore the absolute fact that science is proven that life begins at conception." http://abcn.ws/WgmkWj

MICHIGAN GOP'S ANUZIS EYES SENATE SEAT. One person helping to put on CPAC this year is former Michigan state party chair, Saul Anuzis. He also helped run the Romney campaign in Michigan and now is seriously considering entering elected politics himself, telling ABC News' Shushannah Walshe and Chris Good he is taking a good look at running for the open U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated in 2014 with Sen. Carl Levin's retirement. "Michigan is in a unique situation," Anuzis said in the hallways of the Gaylord National Resort in National Harbor, Md. "Michigan is a purple seat that could turn red in the right circumstances and in an off presidential year is when we have traditionally won our seats?I think it could be a unique opportunity so I'm talking to everyone who is interested in running, I'm talking to our donors, I'm talking to our activists to see what the feel is out there. We will see who ultimately emerges, but I am looking at it myself and I will decide in the next couple of weeks if I can put together a race to make it competitive." Anuzis, who also ran unsuccessfully for RNC chair in 2009 and 2011, said the most important thing is making sure a Republican wins, whether it is him or someone else, and he's being "practical" about it. WATCH: http://abcn.ws/Z1TKDv

ALLEN WEST, 'STILL ALIVE,' TALKS GAY MARRIAGE, IMMIGRATION. ABC News' Shushannah Walshe and Chris Good caught up with former Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., at CPAC and despite his loss to Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., in November he said "2012 was great for me." "I'm still alive," West said while he was stopping to greet supporters outside of the main ballroom here. "You guys think just because you lose a congressional race doesn't mean you are dead, doesn't mean you can't continue to serve your country so to be here to be part of the opening speaking and continue to talk about our country, I'm doing fine." CPAC invited West to give the keynote speech at the conference in 2011. This year he was one of the first speakers opening up CPAC 2013, held in National Harbor, Md. As for his political future he said he is "probably not" going to make a run for his former South Florida in 2014 because "there are a lot of things I want to do," but he kept the door open for 2016. "I want to help others so we're going to launch a PAC that will help minority and military conservatives," West said. "That's my immediate focus and then we will see what God leads me to do in 2016." OBAMA MUSTACHE FANTASY. Bemoaning the loss of his anonymity ahead of his trip to Israel next week, the president told Israeli Channel 2 that he often wishes he could just be a regular tourist, notes ABC's Mary Bruce. "Sometimes I have this fantasy that I can put on a disguise, wear a fake mustache and I can wander through Tel Aviv and go to a bar and have a conversation," he said in an interview taped at the White House earlier this week. Obama said he misses the "spontaneous interactions" he used to have when he traveled. "I'd love to sit at a cafe and just hang out," he said. http://abcn.ws/13Z1EFP

BEING JOE BIDEN. Ever wonder what goes through Vice President Joe Biden's head? ABC's Arlette Saenz reports that the White House has just launched an audio series called "Being Biden," where the vice president will share his story of a photograph in which he appears. The first picture featured in the series is of Biden's serving rolls at a wild game dinner in Delaware earlier this month. The vice president is shaking hands with a man wearing a hunting-style shirt featuring deer in the woods as Biden carries a tong in his other hand. "Hey folks, I want to tell you about this picture you're looking at," Biden said about the picture. "These are a couple of guys in their hunting shirts that I'm serving a meal to, along with the folks you see in the back gourd and the occasion is once a year the Whitehall Neck Sportsman Club holds a dinner. "I've been attending it for over 30 years. It's called a wild game dinner and they go out and they hunt for wild game that they then cook up and serve at the Leipsic fire hall, as you see in the background and all the money goes to charity and then there's an auction and they auction off guns and bows and all that money as well goes to originally went to [defray] the costs and expenses of a buddy of theirs who was injured in a hunting accident years ago and now it goes to help people in need." http://abcn.ws/13YzHOq

Senate rejects GOP effort to repeal 'Obamacare'

(AP) ? The Democratic-controlled Senate has rejected a Republican effort to attach the repeal of President Barack Obama's health care law to a government spending bill.

The 45-52 vote defeated the effort, which was led by conservatives. They say that when the law is fully in effect, it will jeopardize the nation's fragile economic recovery. But Obama's allies say national health care could help strengthen the economy in part by encouraging health maintenance and prevention. The law has been upheld by the Supreme Court.

The Republican sponsors of the repeal knew it would fail Wednesday but said it was important to put senators on the record. Twenty Democratic-held seats and 13 seats held by Republicans will be up for election next year.

Sorry, But Bananas Won't Calm Your Caffeine Jitters

Some baristas swear that bananas can cure your coffee jitters, but the science just doesn't add up.

    Daniel M.N. Turner/NPR

Some baristas swear that bananas can cure your coffee jitters, but the science just doesn't add up.

    Daniel M.N. Turner/NPR

It happens to the best of us. You drink one too many cups of coffee and, for the next few hours, you end up acting like a hyper preschooler who just can't sit still.

Which can be pretty inconvenient if it's, say, noon and you're at the office, or if it's midnight and you can't fall asleep.

Wouldn't it be nice if there were something quick and easy that you could take to combat the effects of over-caffeination? Something like ... a banana?

Last week, food blog Serious Eats floated the idea that eating a banana might indeed be an effective way to remedy over-caffeination. This, based on advice solicited from baristas like Simon Ouderkirk of SPoT Coffee.

"Folks, science has proven that bananas will stop the jitters and get your eyesight right after too many espressos," he told Serious Eats.

As far as we can tell, the "scientific" argument for why bananas might tame an unwanted caffeine jolt rests on the fact that caffeine is a diuretic. If you consume too much of it, you risk depleting your levels of important electrolytes like potassium. Eating foods rich in potassium, like bananas, can help to counter this effect.

It's a plausible theory, but is it correct?

Unfortunately not, says Dr. Randy Eichner, professor emeritus of medicine at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

According to Eichner, drinking a few too many cups of coffee will not have any noticeable effect on potassium levels.

"The only cases of low potassium from caffeine I know of were flukes," he writes in an email to The Salt.

He points to the case of a 44-year-old Australian ostrich farmer who experienced severe muscle weakness after drinking 10 liters of Coca-Cola during a wild and crazy night of kangaroo hunting. Turns out, he'd been following that kind of cola-heavy diet on a daily basis for the previous three years.

But even if you did manage to consume enough caffeine to significantly deplete potassium levels, Eichner adds that eating just one banana wouldn't help you out much.

For example, in order to restore the potassium lost from a severe bout of diarrhea, he says you'd have to eat the equivalent of a 5-foot-long banana.

Sorry, folks, but it looks like bananas aren't a caffeination cure-all after all.

And until the day when mega bananas do become available for purchase, Eichner suggests a more practical, if less whimsical, way to treat over-caffeination: "Just let it wear off."

US beats Puerto Rico 7-1 in WBC

MIAMI (AP) ? Gio Gonzalez gave Team USA its best start yet, and David Wright provided a big finish.

Gonzalez pitched five scoreless innings and the Americans beat Puerto Rico 7-1 in the World Baseball Classic on Tuesday night.

Wright drove in five runs, the last three with a bases-loaded double in the eighth. That prompted chants of "U-S-A! U-S-A!" from the crowd of 32,872.

"Obviously the adrenalin gets pumping for this tournament," Wright said. "You wear that uniform, you want to go out there and represent your country. Hitting in this lineup is ridiculous. You have some of the best hitters in the game, and it creates some matchup problems."

The United States fell behind in all three games in the opening round, but led from the first inning against Puerto Rico.

The Americans will play Thursday night against the Dominican Republic, which remained unbeaten in the WBC by rallying past Italy 5-4 on Tuesday.

"It's a marquee matchup," U.S. manager Joe Torre said. "They haven't lost. They've got some guys having some fun. They have a lot of confidence. But I feel good about my team."

Puerto Rico plays Italy in an elimination game Wednesday.

"If you go inside our clubhouse, everybody is up," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "We lost today. Turn the page. We concentrate on Wednesday."

Gonzalez, who grew up in nearby Hialeah, struck out five for the hometown team and departed with a 3-0 lead. He said U.S. pitching coach Greg Maddux helped him keep from getting distracted by the importance of the game and the big crowd.

"He said to think about fishing or something and take your mind off it," Gonzalez said. "Tune it out and think of something real simple. When you get some of the greats of baseball to help you out with your composure and keep your tunnel vision, that's the best you can do."

Gonzalez lowered the ERA of the U.S. rotation to 4.00.

"Gio set the tone early, coming out and absolutely getting us in the dugout quick," Wright said. "We didn't have to play too long on defense, and we kept putting runners on base. It was building that momentum, and Gio started it."

Gonzalez said he worked well with catcher Joe Mauer and shook him off only once.

"He was tough," Mauer said. "Early on he was trying to find his curveball. After the third inning he pretty much had everything going."

Five U.S. relievers combined to allow one run over the final four innings.

Wright had an RBI groundout in the third and a run-scoring single in the fifth. He's 7 for 16 (.438) with 10 RBIs in four games.

"It makes my job a lot easier when I'm hitting behind Ryan Braun and Joe Mauer," Wright said. "It seems like every at-bat there were runners in scoring position."

Mauer's two-out RBI double scored Braun in the opening inning. The Americans added a run in the third on singles by Brandon Phillips and Braun and Wright's groundout.

Adam Jones had a two-run single in the seventh.

Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton earned a big cheer from the Miami crowd when he made a running catch at the warning track to rob Martin Maldonado of a two-out, two-RBI hit in the fourth inning. Stanton also ended an 0-for-7 slump when he singled twice and walked.

"It's one of those things where you don't realize it has only been two games," Stanton said. "You can say I was pressing a little bit, but it was seven at-bats and I had good at-bats and put good swings on the ball before. So it wasn't a big deal. But it's nice to get them for sure."

Braun and Mauer each reached base four times.

Puerto Rico starter Mario Santiago allowed three runs in 4 1-3 innings. Angel Pagan's drove in Puerto Rico's run in the eighth.

    Video: Ketchup turns somersaults

    Friday, March 8, 2013

The unusual behavior of complex fluids is part of our daily life: cake dough climbs up the stirring bar, ketchup becomes liquid when you shake it. Also technology uses such phenomena: if we add a small amount of long-chained polymer molecules, a pipeline can transport more oil. The polymers reduce the flow resistance. But up to now the origin of these effects was unclear. The engineers had to rely on estimates and lengthy trials.

A team of physicists led by Professor Andreas Bausch, Chair of Cellular Biophysics at TUM now developed a numerical model of such liquids. Experimental heart of the work are a fine flow channel and a micro-camera. Like the camera looking down at the pit lane of Formula 1 races, the scientists monitored the movements of individual polymer molecules in the flow.

From their observations they conducted a theoretical model for the motion of rigid molecules different from the current. In addition, they were able also to provide for colleagues suspected of movement patterns experimental confirmation.

    Challenging for theory and experiment

"Due to the incredibly large number of degrees of freedom the study and description of the motion of polymers is a big challenge," says Markus Harasim, one of the two main authors. Even a simple system of water and polymer shows the effects of complex fluids. In order to make the long molecules visible, the physicists marked the polymers with a fluorescent dye. This allowed them to study the movements under various conditions.

To their surprise the mathematical modeling showed, that even the simple model of a stiff rod was suitable as a starting point. Then the researchers refined the model by taking into account the thermal motion, the flexibility of the molecule and the higher flow resistance of a curved polymer. "Since we now know the microscopic mechanisms, we can extend the model to more complex geometries and flows. And thanks to our experimental set-up we should be able to verify our theories," says co-author Bernhard Wunderlich, who is a well known rapper in the hip-hop band "Blumentopf" in his off time.

Meteor or Comet Sighting - March 6 Canada - US Border

I just saw a meteor about 1:30 AM PST

I'm not very good with descriptions and don't have any pics, sorry.
I'm not sure if it was a Fireball

It was travelling south east. I looked to the south when I went outside and it just appeared, arced somewhat as it started but more or less appearing it was going straight down in a hazy bluish blur. To what would be roughly the Canadian US border near Sumas Mountain. I live in south west British Columbia near Washington state border.
There was no boom sound. It wasn't very bright.
I don't know how to estimate degrees but I would guess about 60 degrees. I wasn't looking up.

After some searching I wonder if it was the Comet Pan-STARRS?

Cinderella's slipper: the ultimate must-have shoe

NEW YORK (AP) ? There would be no "happily ever after" for Cinderella without her glitzy glass slippers, so careful attention was paid to the shoes for the princess-to-be's Broadway opening this weekend.

For "Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella," which officially opens Sunday at the Broadway Theatre, costume designer William Ivey Long and footwear designer Stuart Weitzman created a pair of pumps so sparkly they "light up the upper balcony," Weitzman says.

"The shoe is its own character in the show, and it will inspire the dream for so many other women."

Shoe shopaholics and Carrie Bradshaw types surely have been inspired by the Cinderella fashion fantasy, muses Weitzman, a 26-year industry veteran. How could they not? After all, he says, Cinderella gets the shoes ? flattering, delicate and powerful all at once ? and then gets her Prince Charming.

When people describe the stunning bride or the prettiest red-carpet starlet, the comparison rarely ? if ever ? is made to Sleeping Beauty or Snow White.

It's always Cinderella, belle of the ball.

"Cinderella is the gold standard for aspiration," agrees Long. "The slippers are so iconic, and they are recognized worldwide."

He says their only rival might be Dorothy's red ruby slippers in "The Wizard of Oz."

Because the shoes are so famous, the designers had to work with a certain set of expectations: The shoes had to be romantic and sexy, have a sparkly fairy-dust touch ? and they had to be seen by everyone in the theater.

Actress Laura Osnes, who plays Cinderella, couldn't risk shards and splinters from real glass, so the designers used Plexiglas instead.

Weitzman employed a welded-construction technique that uses no screws, normally used in high heels, so Cinderella could have a seamless look.

"This is the most magical world I've been asked to conjure up," says Long, whose 60-plus show credits include costumes for "Chicago," ''Hairspray" and "The Boy From Oz." Instead of going all Disney or using the famous French illustrations that came a century before (Cinderella-style folk tales are hundreds of years older than that) as inspiration, Long decided to weave nature ? with an emphasis on butterflies and vines ? into his visual picture instead of a particular time or place.

The idea that Cinderella had to be the most beautiful woman in the room, with the most gorgeous dress and coveted shoes, is what guided him and Weitzman, Long says.

They had to walk a fine line to avoid anything too gimmicky, even working on the giant Broadway stage, so they decided against threading lights through the heel of the shoe or other special effects.

Weitzman knows how to create shoes that light up a room. For years, he made "million-dollar Oscar shoes," diamond-covered footwear that a celebrity would wear to the Academy Awards. He gave that up at the height of the recession, but says he can do pretty much the same dazzling look with crystals.

The designer says he could imagine his typical customer wearing a version of the Cinderella slipper at a summer party, a night at the opera or a night on the town. He adds: "It would be one sexy shoe with cool jeans."

Yes, his Clearly Timeless collection based on the fairy-tale footwear is being shipped to stores.
